We’ve been waiting for word on when we’ll be able to buy Samsung’s Galaxy Camera. And today AT&T said that the device will be coming to their network on November 16th, this Friday. According to our records this is the first camera the carrier has sold, but rightfully so as you’ll need a data plan to take full advantage of its features.
If you recall the Galaxy Camera is camera then phone. Or more like camera then smartphone, minus the phone part as you won’t be able to directly make calls. That is to say you can instantly upload pictures to the web, be it Facebook, Flickr, or really anywhere your heart desires. The Galaxy Camera will ship with Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean), though Google will release 4.2 this Tuesday when it ships their Nexus 4 – when the update will roll out to all devices is always TBD.
AT&T is asking $500 of your hard earned money. You won’t have to sign a contract, which is to say this appears to be the retail price of the camera. And if you so opt, you don’t have to get a data plan – you can use the Galaxy Camera as a camera and since it has WiFi built-in you’ll still be able to blast your photos to the Net, provided of course you’ve got a connected device near by – how well it will work with all smart devices is still unknown.
Hardware wise, the Galaxy Camera has a 16-megapixel backside illuminated CMOS sensor and a dedicated real-deal flash. So shooting in low light, which often results in grainy and blurry photos with a smartphone, will be a thing of the past. Other features include a quad-core 1.4 GHz processor, a 4.8-inch HD Super Clear LCD, a 21x optical zoom, and a hole host of “expert settings” that will accessible via the Galaxy Camera’s Android menus.
According to AT&T, if you buy the Galaxy Camera with a Samsung smartphone and sign a 2-year contract, they’ll give you an extra $100 back, which drops the effective price to $400. Data plans for the camera start at $15 a month, which nets you 250MB, though it looks like you might be able to share a data plan for $10 and siphon off your existing one.
