iPad cases are a must-have item if you own an iPad. Considering the financial investment you’ve already made, you want to ensure that the screen isn’t damaged and your iPad is protected from falls. We considered a range of essential features when we began this guide: compatibility, durability, protection, and functionality. While there are a range of iPad cases available on the market today, we focused primarily on models that are compatible with 5th and 6th generation models as these are some of the most common options that most users will own.
Durability and protection are important factors as they’ll ensure that your iPad stays intact. All of the models we reviewed guaranteed drop protection. But only a few were designed for more rugged use. Specifically, #5 and #7 are ideal if you’re the type that easily damages electronics, or you need to use your iPad in the field where the risk of dropping it is greater.
#5, the ZUGU CASE for 5th and 6th Generation 9.7-inch iPads, passed the five-foot military drop test. Whereas #7, the New Trent iPad 9.7 Case for 5th/6th Generation iPads, features an oversized yet lightweight construction with a three-piece snap-on case and a built-in hand strap for more secure use.
And finally, we focused on functionality. At a minimum, your iPad case should offer an angled stand. Most models on the market will provide at least two angles for viewing and typing. Within our selections, #1, #3, #4, and #6 all include two angles. But if you want enhanced angle choices, consider #2 which gives you a choice of three angles, or #7 with an impressive seven angles. Another standard feature which all of the iPad cases with covers offer is auto/sleep support. Since the cover has magnets inside of it, when closed, it keeps your iPad “asleep” to conserve battery life and automatically wakes your iPad when you open the cover. Note that #7 is the only non-cover iPad case and as such doesn’t support auto sleep/wake features. But for a tablet upgrade, you may want to take a look at some of the best features of the Apple iPad Air 2, which has several significant updates to the original Air.
Another “nice to have” functionality feature we considered while selecting our list of iPad cases was space to carry a stylus or Apple Pencil. In some situations, your iPad case can come with an additional stylus as well as a stylus holder. This was the case for our and Honorable Mention models. Whereas #5 offers just a longer Apple Pencil loop for more stability. More budget-friendly options may lack a stylus holder entirely.
