How We Decided

iPad cases are a must-have item if you own an iPad. Considering the financial investment you’ve already made, you want to ensure that the screen isn’t damaged and your iPad is protected from falls. We considered a range of essential features when we began this guide: compatibility, durability, protection, and functionality. While there are a range of iPad cases available on the market today, we focused primarily on models that are compatible with 5th and 6th generation models as these are some of the most common options that most users will own.

Durability and protection are important factors as they’ll ensure that your iPad stays intact. All of the models we reviewed guaranteed drop protection. But only a few were designed for more rugged use. Specifically, #5 and #7 are ideal if you’re the type that easily damages electronics, or you need to use your iPad in the field where the risk of dropping it is greater.

#5, the ZUGU CASE for 5th and 6th Generation 9.7-inch iPads, passed the five-foot military drop test. Whereas #7, the New Trent iPad 9.7 Case for 5th/6th Generation iPads, features an oversized yet lightweight construction with a three-piece snap-on case and a built-in hand strap for more secure use.

And finally, we focused on functionality. At a minimum, your iPad case should offer an angled stand. Most models on the market will provide at least two angles for viewing and typing. Within our selections, #1, #3, #4, and #6 all include two angles. But if you want enhanced angle choices, consider #2 which gives you a choice of three angles, or #7 with an impressive seven angles. Another standard feature which all of the iPad cases with covers offer is auto/sleep support. Since the cover has magnets inside of it, when closed, it keeps your iPad “asleep” to conserve battery life and automatically wakes your iPad when you open the cover. Note that #7 is the only non-cover iPad case and as such doesn’t support auto sleep/wake features. But for a tablet upgrade, you may want to take a look at some of the best features of the Apple iPad Air 2, which has several significant updates to the original Air.

Another “nice to have” functionality feature we considered while selecting our list of iPad cases was space to carry a stylus or Apple Pencil. In some situations, your iPad case can come with an additional stylus as well as a stylus holder. This was the case for our and Honorable Mention models. Whereas #5 offers just a longer Apple Pencil loop for more stability. More budget-friendly options may lack a stylus holder entirely. iPad Cases Buying Guide

The Most Important Features to Consider

  1. Size & Compatibility
Even though iPads are only manufactured by Apple, they come in a wide array of sizes depending on the generation that you purchase. So, you can’t just focus on a case made for an iPad but must also take into account the generation so that you have full access to core features such as rear or front-facing cameras, charging ports, auxiliary jacks or control buttons.
  2. Durability
No one wants to buy an iPad case that needs to be replaced frequently. So prioritize sturdy materials like silicone, premium plastics, or real leather that are meant to last.
  3. Protection
The main reason you’re buying an iPad case is that you want to protect your investment. So that means you want to keep your iPad from being scratched either on the screen or on the back casing. A quality iPad case should feature a protective cover flap for the screen and a sturdy backing that also covers the back of your iPad. Some iPad cases come with a complimentary screen protector which can provide an added layer of security to protect the screen. There is also the smart cover if you want to use that.
  4. Functionality
Depending on the iPad generation that you own, you may need additional features such as a built-in space to hold the Apple Pencil. But a commonly added feature for many iPad cases is that it can convert into a stand so that you can comfortably watch media content or use your iPad as a computer replacement. Some iPad cases may also come with options like built-in Bluetooth enabled keyboards to further enhance your iPad’s functionality.

  • How can I determine which iPad generation I own?
This is an easy piece of information to find. Go to the Settings app on your iPad and then select “General”. Once there, select “About” and you’ll see the “Model Name” and “Model Number” fields which will list the specific generation and model number for your iPad. Most iPad case manufacturers are very specific about the compatible models for each case. So, having this information on hand will make it easier to buy the right iPad case for your needs.
  • I thought I could only buy an iPad case from Apple?
While you can choose to shop directly through Apple — either in-store or online — this isn’t necessary. There are plenty of aftermarket suppliers that produce Apple-compatible accessories, including quality iPad cases.
  • Apple products are typically pricey. So does this mean that an iPad case is also going to be expensive?
Not at all. Because there are plenty of aftermarket suppliers for this accessory, it’s possible to find extremely affordable iPad cases that will be more than enough to protect your investment. But of course, factors that will impact price includes materials used, if it offers added functionality such as a built-in keyboard, or if it was produced by a designer brand.
