Award: TOP PICK

WHY WE LIKE IT: With a simple and durable design, smooth 90Hz display, and excellent 5G network capabilities, this dual SIM phone was an easy choice for our top pick spot. It also offers advanced features like reverse wireless charging and added durability with its IP68 rating and Gorilla Glass 6 for the display.

Pros
  • Simple, yet durable form factor
  • Bright, colorful 90Hz display
  • Reverse wireless charging function
Cons
  • Not the highest performing processor
  • Onboard speakers could be better

The Google Pixel 5 is one of the best dual SIM phones, unlocked so you can use it with any wireless carrier without a problem. It features Dual SIM Dual Standby, which uses one local SIM card and one eSIM for versatile functionality. The Pixel 5 also performs incredibly well with standard smartphone functionality. Yes, it features a slower (on paper) Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G processor, but it offers reliable performance that’s hard to beat. This is mostly due to the fact that this phone offers an overly simplified user interface for its Android operating system, which requires less processing power than other Android smartphones. The result is a smooth user experience without stuttering or lagging.

You’ll also get an incredibly well-designed form factor with the Google Pixel 5. It’s not the most exciting design in the world, but it works perfectly well for anyone who doesn’t care about the flashy designs most flagship phones offer today. The phone is also durable with Corning Gorilla Glass 6 on the display and an IP68 water and dust resistance rating. The Pixel’s display features a 90Hz refresh rate. It’s also bright and colorful, which looks great for movies and mobile games. The Pixel’s battery life should last you all day long with standard use, and it can also be charged wirelessly. We were impressed that Google also included reverse wireless charging, which allows you to convert the Pixel 5 into a wireless charging pad for your other devices.

The phone features a Samsung Exynos 9610 processor, which is a mid-range chipset that works well in nearly every situation. It’s not the fastest processor around, but it provides a consistent performance so you’ll hardly ever experience freezing or lagging.

We were also impressed by the Samsung’s overall design. It looks like a premium flagship smartphone due to its slim bezels on the display and sleek overall appearance. Holding the phone tells a different story though. The plastic in the design is a little cheap, but it isn’t surprising considering the lower price point. However, you still get a massive 4000 mAh battery that gives you all-day battery life and an ever-elusive headphone jack. The camera on the Samsung Galaxy A50 budget phone is a little disappointing but performs well in most circumstances. The display is the best part of this phone. It’s an AMOLED display with FHD+ resolution and vivid colors, which is impressive for such an affordable phone. For better camera options, check out the best phones for vlogging.

You’ll even get HDR10+ support, which makes everything on your phone more colorful and bright.

This powerful dual SIM phone also features an impressive chipset in the Kirin 980 CPU. It’s an octa-core processor that makes everything run incredibly smooth on this phone. Everything from the gorgeous OLED display to the user interface runs smoothly. The UI is a little complicated at times, though, and lacks the refinement of Samsung and iPhone alternatives. However, it doesn’t lag or stutter thanks to the phone’s powerful process. You’ll also be impressed by the Mate 20’s premium design. Pros
  • Display is clear and detailed

The Motorola Moto G6 smartphone isn’t going to blow any of the flagship phones out of the water with its performance or design, but it’s not even trying to. It understands that it comes to the table as a budget smartphone and performs its role really well. For starters, the Moto G6 features a reliable Snapdragon 750 chipset, which does more than enough to power the phone and its simple user interface. The phone isn’t the best for gaming or using work mobile applications, but it will do well enough for most casual smartphone users.

How We Decided

As we researched the different dual SIM phones on the market today, we first focused our efforts on only including phones with active dual SIM capability. This is the best form of using two SIM cards because it allows you to receive phone calls and text messages from either SIM card at any given time. The overall process for adding a SIM card should also be easy, with simple access to the SIM card slots. We preferred options that allowed you to change SIM cards through side access slots but still included options with the slots behind removable back covers.

Next, we moved on to ranking each phone in this buying guide based on its overall performance and feature set, much like we have done in other phone buying guides. We first looked at processor performance. Since this the brain of the phone, we ranked options higher if their processors were more powerful. Along this same line of thinking, we also rated smartphones higher if they featured simple user interfaces, which work well with the internal chipsets to create extra-smooth user experiences.

Finally, we looked at build and design quality, including screen quality, camera quality, and durability. Most modern smartphones include high-resolution displays that are bright and colorful. We ranked dual SIM phones higher if their displays offered more resolution than full HD. We also preferred phones with added durability features, like IP68 water resistance and shatter-resistant screens.

Best Dual SIM Phone Buyer’s Guide

The Most Important Features to Consider

  1. Dual Passive vs. Dual Active
There are two different types of dual SIM phones to consider: dual passive and dual active. Let’s take a look at the differences between the two:

    • Dual Passive: This is an outdated approach to dual SIM technology. It means that only one SIM card can be active at a time. If you want to use the other SIM card, you need to manually activate it through the phone’s internal settings. Fortunately, you won’t find this approach to dual SIM technology in many of today’s dual SIM smartphones.
    • Dual Active: This approach to dual SIM technology means both SIM will remain active at the same time. You’ll be able to receive voice calls and text messages from either SIM card without needing to manually adjust settings. Unfortunately, this approach also tends to drain your phone’s battery life much quicker since it requires two radio transceivers to be active all the time.
  2. Battery Life
Since most dual SIM phones usually require two transceivers to constantly be active, you may experience much lower battery life than expected while using your phone. This is why it’s important to purchase an option with long-lasting battery life. The size of a phone’s battery is measured in milliampere-hours or mAh. The larger the mAh, the longer your battery will last. However, there are many factors that can affect the battery. If you don’t have a powerful, efficient processor, your battery may drain faster than options that do have this feature. Also, if you’re constantly running your phone on its highest display brightness, you’ll get less battery life. Keep these things in mind as you consider battery life.
  3. Performance
Like other smartphones, you’ll still want a dual SIM phone that can perform reliably throughout your day. This performance is a result of the combination of processor power, user interfaces, and network speeds. Look for phones with powerful, current-gen chipsets and simplified user interfaces for the best performance.
  4. Durability/Design
Your dual SIM phone’s overall design and durability is another important consideration to make before clicking the buy button. You’ll want to purchase a phone that feels good in your hand and one that looks good, as well. Most modern smartphones today are larger than they ever have been, which is great for power users, but it also means they’re easier to slip from your hands and drop. This is why it’s important to buy a phone with a high level of durability, usually in the form of water resistance and drop protection. Look for IP ratings (usually IP68) and tough screens made from materials like Corning’s Gorilla Glass.
  5. Camera
Dual SIM smartphones are starting to quickly outpace digital cameras in quality and portability. If you’re a fan of taking pictures and videos during your travels, you’ll definitely want to purchase a phone with a high-quality camera. Most smartphones feature multiple lenses, each with different functionality and megapixel resolution, and can even record in stunning 4K video.
