The iPhone 5 has a 4-inch screen. It’s slender, fits in the pocket with out much obstruction, and is so light weight it’s hardly noticeable. The Samsung SIII on the other hand, the iPhone 5’s biggest and baddest nemesis is not any of these things. And hence why Samsung took the proverbial curtain off the Samsung SIII mini today.
Instead of a 4.8-inch screen, the SIII mini sports a 4-inch display. It uses a Super LCD with a 233 PPI, down from its full sized brother’s 306 PPI. But that”s not the only spec Samsung has cut down. The processor hums along at 1Ghz, there is just 1GB of RAM, a 1,500 mAh battery, and 5-megapixel camera. The battery is understandable, as is the processor, but we can’t seem to find reason why they opted for a paltry 5MP camera. An 8-megapixel shooter would have put it in closer contention to the iPhone 5, but perhaps Samsung thinks that reducing every major spec will help sell its mini-domness. One upside is that the Samsung S3 Mini will ship with Android 4.1, or Jelly Bean.
In terms of size the Samsung S3 Mini measures 121.55 x 63 x 9.85 mm and weighs 111.5g. Conversely, the full sized SIII is 136.6 x 70.6 x 8.6 mm and 133g. Not a massive departure on paper, but take a look at the above image and you’ll surely agree it’s quite a fair bit smaller.
