Getting the right point and shoot is as simple as determering what features pique your interest. After that, it’s a question of finding a camera that can actually capture a solid image; good color, tones, and clarity are just some of the things to look for. Since we haven’t had a hands on with Panasonic’s DMC-SZ5, we’re just gonna go ahead and assume it will meet the photographic needs of the general consumer market.
That being said, the SZ5 sports a 10x optical zoom, a 14.1-megapixel sensor, a 25mm ultra wide-angle LEICA DC VARIO-ELMAR lens, Panasonic’s image processing engine Venus, intelligent iA, auto retouch, and probably a few other options to satiate those looking to take their photography beyond a simple point and click approach. But those features are hardly the reason we’re all gitty about this point and shoot camera. The SZ5 rocks built-in WiFi so you can connect it directly to a smartphone running their compatible app. And while you’ll surely be able to upload pics to the net on the fly, the real takeway here is that with the aforementioned Panasonic app you can control the SZ5 from across the room. So once you set up the SZ5 for a shot, you can preview the photo on your iPhone and then activate the camera’s shutter. The Panasonic SZ5 also includes a 3-inch LCD, but keep in mind there is no viewfinder, and it can only records 720p video at 30fps.
Panasonic hasn’t said when the SZ5 will ship, or for how much. But we do know it will be available in black or silver when it does.
