Nintendo always said the Revolution was going to be different. It was never meant to compete directly with the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. It was going to change what we thought about games and who played them. Almost like a Revolution.
And boy is this controller different. The controller, shaped more like a remote control, is perhaps the first one handed controller released in the 20 years of video games. Except for the power glove. Man that kid in the Wizard using it was bad ass. Where was I? Oh yeah, the Revolution controller.
The controller will be controlled using 3D pointing and tilt. You will attach a sensor under your tv to calibrate this free form controller. A good metaphor? Imagine almost like virtual reality where your hand becomes the controller. Move your hand up, the controller moves up. Kind of like the powerglove, only not crappy. Man, how pysched were you to see Mario 3 when the Wizard came out? Uh I mean I wasn’t. Nerds.
Alright, I swear that’s the last power glove / Wizard reference. So this controller will also feature:
- Built in rumble — that’s right, wireless and rumble this time around
- A few buttons – there’s a trigger underneath and 3 action buttons on the face
- Directional pad – for playing old school games when you rotate the controller 90 degrees
- Expandable – See the nifty attachment with the analog stick in the picture? Yeah you can attach that and more to the controller.
- No more silly channels – Remember fumbling around with the small channel wheel on the wavebird? No more! Select controller 1 to 4. It’s simple, it’s clean.
The controller is definitely innovative. Let’s just see if it completely alienates third parties from ever porting another game to the system. I mean the controller is cool, but with only a few buttons, it will really need games to be designed around the controller. I’m sure the first and second party games released by Nintendo will blow our minds. Nintendo, will you innovate yourself out of the industry?
