It’s not a secret that, for some reason, the technological elite would like our gadgets to smell funny. There’s a whole history of gadgets with a certain ability to generate smell that’s allegedly pleasant. And it’s one Oscar Meyer is trying to add to, with its new Bacon Alarm Clock.
Wake Up And Smell The… Well, You Know
Yes, riding the bacon fad to even deeper depths is Oscar Meyer’s attempt to get you to wake up to the smell of sizzling bacon. The idea is that the smell device, plugged into your iPhone’s Lightning port, is paired with Oscar Meyer’s alarm app, which uses the sound of sizzling bacon to wake you up. Combine the two and you have a reason to get up, get out of bed, and discover that, in fact, nobody is making you bacon and you’ll have to resort to cereal.
A Fine And Rare Meat
However, this isn’t actually up for sale. No, you must instead apply for this promotional item; you have to fill out a form on Oscar Meyer’s website. Or you can just watch their rather trippy little promotional video:
So would that make this lady the Queen of Bacon Flowers? OK, I’ll stop now.
This is little more than an entertaining ridiculous promotional gimmick, of course, but do we really expect anything less from the lunchmeat company that made the Weinermobile a national treasure? And it does work, if you were wondering: While Oscar Meyer hasn’t seen fit to send us a test unit, the basic science is there, and it’s fully functional. It simply releases volatile particles into the air to simulate the smell of bacon.
Still, we don’t know that the disappointment of waking up and having no bacon is worth the application. Not when there’s an alarm clock that will actually make you bacon.
