BMW has announced that its new i3 will begin its first deliveries come January 2014 and be priced at about $35,000, which many thought would be somewhere in the ballpark of $35,000-$40,000 for the fully EV plug-in. Europe will begin deliveries in November for the fully electric version of BMW’s rear-wheel-drive i3 that boasts 168 hp and 184 lb.-ft. of torque. Its e-motor will be mounted over the rear axle and is supplied with energy via its 22-kWh lithium-ion battery pallet that’s under the passenger compartment.
Recharging the i3 can be done in either of three ways: public or personal plug-in charging stations, via the onboard’s system’s Eco Pro and Eco Pro Plus modes (these add resistance to the drivetrain so to save energy) or through the traditional brake energy and off-throttle coasting regeneration usually found in EV cars. It’s said that the car can get upwards of 100 miles on a full charge. If you want to get the model that features a range-extending, two-cylinder 600cc engine for the hybrid version, it will cost you an extra $2,000 on top of the base price. The hybrid e-drive i3 version will be available soon after the full-EV launch in January 2014. Right now, BMW sees the US as the top market for its upcoming i3.
