BMW has officially revealed its i3 worldwide and have announced that it will go for $41,350 when it becomes available in the second half of 2014. The new EV will come in three different trim levels: Mega (standard in the States), Giga and Tera. BMW has created a unique vehicle layout for the i3 that they’ve named “LifeDrive architecture,” which features the Life Module and the Drive Module. According to BMW, the Live Module is the car’s pillar-less passenger cell, which is the first mass-produced monocoque made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) and BMW plans to use more of this technology in future cars they create.
The Drive Module is a 100-percent aluminum chassis mounted under the Life Module that houses all the necessary parts that run the i3 like the 22-kilowatt, 450-pound lithium ion battery that’s mounted as centrally as possible, and provides power to a rear-mounted electric motor that turns the rear wheels. The i3 pushes out 170 hp and can go from 0-30 mph in 3.5 seconds and 0-60 mph in about 7 seconds before topping out at 93 mph. Its EV range is from 90-100 miles and the standard charger can fill the battery in three hours, taking 30 minutes for a full charge. But BMW will also provide customers the option to install a 34-hp, 650cc two-cylinder generator as a range extender for the electric drive system if they are a bit nervous about its range.
