This year has been big for VW’s Golf model, with new versions popping up throughout the year. Earlier this year, we saw the new GTI, GTD Variant and TDI BlueMotion debut in Europe and now comes the release of the Golf R that features a new 2.0-liter direct-injection turbo-four that pushes out 296 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque (up 30 hp from the outgoing model). To create the boost in power, the engine sports some new features like a new cylinder head, exhaust valves, valve seats, valve springs and pistons, and a new turbocharger.

And like the other Golf R models, this new one features permanent all-wheel drive, with this one sporting the the latest 4MOTION system with a fifth-gen Haldex coupling. There’s also a new sport suspension, optional dynamic chassis system with race mode and a stability control system for the track. The manual transmission version is said to go from 0-62 mph in 5.3 seconds, which is 0.4 seconds faster than the outgoing model. The stick version goes from 0-62 mph in 4.9 seconds.

Exterior styling cues include unique bumpers, side skirts, rear diffuser and 18-inch aluminum wheels, as well as bixenon headlights, dark-red LED taillights and four chrome exhaust tips and is lowered by 0.8 inches. The inside features  leather three-spoke sport steering wheel, ambient lighting, automatic climate control and a touchscreen stereo. Right now, the car isn’t headed for the States, but sources say it might hit US shores next year.
