After a long day of work and hunting down an XBox 360 hard drive, I finally got to go home and enjoy my XBox 360. I’m definitely not ready to give you a full review of the system, but I’d like to at least give my first impressions.
First off, high definition is amazing. I cannot believe Nintendo is not going to embrace high definition with the Revolution. Playing split screen is no longer painful thanks to the much higher resolution of 720p. And you cannot imagine how much better games look in HD.
Profiles are cool. Yeah they are. Each time you plug in a controller you can now choose a profile to use while you’re plugged in. These profiles allow you to save particular settings for a game, save your scores, hop on XBox live, etc. Out of that feature set I think saving your individual settings is the coolest concept. In my frat house of a home, being able to pick up a controller, choose my profile, and instantly getting my settings is nice.
The wireless controllers are sexy. Really sexy. I’m glad to see Microsoft spent a little more engineering on the controllers this time around. Their last round was atrocious. This round is very very acceptable. Syncing up the controllers was a little confusing at first. I mean my roommate spent half the day playing with a wired controller cause he couldn’t figure out the damn thing. Took me 30 seconds. Coolest feature of the new controllers? Shut down the console. Gives sore losers a way to fight back.
So far my overall impression is that Microsoft has really matured as a console developer. Last round with the XBox, I felt as though they just slapped a decent computer in a “small” box and called it a console. This round, Microsoft slapped a friggin’ powerhouse of a computer in a box and even used a little polish. The Xbox 360 actually feels like a console.
Review of the console and impressions of some of the games to follow.
Grew up back East, got sick of the cold and headed West. Since I was small I have been pushing buttons - both electronic and human. With an insatiable need for tech I thought "why not start a blog focusing on technology, and use my dislikes and likes to post on gadgets."
