Cigars, booze, and felt, very green felt are things I tend to associate with a poker game.  And of course the always necessary deck of paper cards.  That’s why this Bold Poker iOS App is so perplexing, yet intriguing.

Unlike other iOS games, which I’d expect to replace its entire physical counterpart, including the experience, Bold Poker supplants the physical deck of cards for a set of virtual ones.  Though instead of playing over the net with a grip of strangers. you’ll actually still sit down with your best buds and still be able to enjoy the tom foolery that is sure to ensue.

You’ll need at least 3 iOS devices, provided of course one of them is an iPad, which serves as a deck.  Alternatively, you can swap out the iPad with five iPod Touches or iPhone’s, with each one becoming its own card.  If you’re really nuts, players can use two iOS devices, one for each card their dealt.  If you haven’t figured it out yet, Bold Poker is effectively Texas Hold ‘Em Poker, though I’d expect other poker versions to arrive, that is assuming this one proves to be a success.

Players will need a WiFi connection for the game to work – no Bluetooth here – and once the cards are automatically shuffled they’re distributed to each player with the push of a “button,” which appears to be a poker chip.  Unfortunately, chips, or betting doesn’t seem to be supported (I can’t stream the included video at my location), but for an added touch of realism you could and your own mirror, allowing you to reflect your hand in a clandestine manner.

Bold Poker is available now in the app store for $1.99.
