Sony’s line of NEX cameras have long been an attractive option for the general consumer looking for something with the size and simplicity of a point and shoot, yet would like more versatility in terms of features and lens options. Nevertheless, they’ve long lacked a wireless capability. Until yesterday, when Sony unveiled the all new NEX-5R.
A 16.1-megapixel APS-C sensor, often found in higher end DSLR cameras, captures crisp photographs and full HD video. Complementing that is a hybrid AF system, which combines phase and contrast detection, allowing the NEX-5R to hone in on its subject in a moment’s notice, all but ensuring the perfect photograph. Further extending the NEX-5R’s versatility is the aforementioned WiFi b/g connectivity. It’s capable of not only uploading photos directly to Facebook, but can create an ad-hoc connection with a smartphone (Android or iOS) as well as your laptop. You simply need to download the accompanying app to your handset, and assuming you’ve got service, you’ll be in business. Alternatively, Sony’s NEX-5R can upload photos directly to the web provided you’ve got an available and open WiFi connection. And if you do, you’ll also be able to download a range of proprietary free camera apps. These will include, at least upon launch, “Picture Effect+”; “Bracket Pro”; “Multi Frame NR”; “Photo Retouch”; and “Smart Remote Control. Sony also plans to release “Time-Lapse” and “Cinematic Photo” apps. How they’ll stack up to Nikon and Samsung‘s offering remains to be seen, but since both of those brands offer cameras built upon the Android platform, it’s a fair assumption that they’ll offer a bit more versatility.
Like the original NEX-5, the 5R includes a 180-degree flippable, 3-inch touchscreen with a 921,000 dot resolution. Other features include an SD and Memory Stick Pro memory card slot, a user selectable ISO 100-25600, and a battery that can purportedly squeeze out 330 shots on a single charge. The Sony NEX-5R measures 110.8 x 58.8 x 38.9mm (WxHxD) and weighs about 9.7oz (without a lens, but with a battery).
The Sony NEX-5T will ship this October in black or white for $650. Tack on $100 for the 18-55mm kit zoom lens.
