You can never be too safe when heading out into the wilderness. And while the smartphone has become a must have tool in your arsenal of gadgetry, its usefulness is somewhat limited to its cellular reception.
Enter the Spot Connect. This pocket sized device connect to your Android or iPhone via Bluetooth, and syncs using an accompanying app. Instead of connecting with a traditional cell tower the Spot transmits data using the magic of satellites. However, you won’t be able to surf the net, check your email, or stream your favorite Spotify tracks. Instead, you’re handset will be effectively be transformed into an SOS device.
Using the included app you’ll be able to notify friends and family of your location during a 24-hour period every 10-minutes. Alternatively, you can alert the authorities of any impending doom with GPS coordinates attached, or simply send a variety of predefined messages to a contact list. And because you can never be too safe, or have too much in terms of redundancy, all of this info can be transcribed to your Twitter and Facebook accounts if you so choose. Just keep in mind that certain packages require additional plans, which needless to say come at an additional cost. But you simply can’t put a dollar amount on your own well being.
The Spot is available for a recommended retail price of $170.
