The Epson EcoTank ET-2840 Special Edition offers excellent value for money with its remarkably low printing costs, high-quality prints and scans, and massive page yield. However, its print speeds are slow and lack automatic duplex printing and Ethernet connectivity.

Product Snapshot

Overview

The Epson EcoTank ET-2840 is an all-in-one inkjet printer launched in early 2023. It has a yield of 4300 monochrome pages (with one black ink bottle) and 7300 color pages, but unlike many of the best printers, it ships with two additional black ink bottles. The printer can print on legal, half-letter, letter, executive, A4, and A6 sizes and glossy material. It has a 1.44” color display but is not a touchscreen and lacks automatic duplex printing. Its input tray holds 100 sheets, and the output tray holds 30 sheets. In line with the best all-in-one printers, connectivity options include WiFi, WiFi Direct, Apple AirPrint, and Mopira.

Consensus

our Verdict

The Epson EcoTank ET-2840 is an affordable mid-range all-in-one printer for families and home offices. Its printing costs of 0.3 cents per page are superb for cost savings, ranking the best among our verified, tested printers. The estimated page yield is massive at 4300 black-only prints (going up to 8600 with the bonus ink bottles) and 7300 color prints, while the 4800 x 1200 DPI print resolution delivers fairly detailed images and text.

The 1200 DPI scan resolution is incredible for scanning documents but isn’t ideal for digitizing images accurately. Also, the 12.15 PPM (black-only) print and 5 PPM (color) print speeds are subpar and unsuitable for fast-paced work environments. Although there’s WiFi, Apple AirPrint, and Mopria support, there’s no Ethernet connectivity.

ReasonS to Buy

  • High-quality prints
    • This affordable mid-range SuperTank is excellent for small offices, home offices, and households with sizable printing needs. Its max print resolution of 4800 x 1200 DPI ensures printouts have excellent details.

  • Excellent scan quality
    • The 1200 DPI scan resolution is great for scanning documents and retaining even the smallest of details accurately (although not best for digitizing images).

  • Extremely low running costs
    • The printing cost of 0.3 cents per page is incredibly meager, ranking the best in our verified, tested list.

Reason to Avoid

  • Slow printing speeds
    • The 12.15 PPM (black-only) print and 5 PPM (color) print speeds are subpar and unsuitable for fast-paced work environments. They rank in the bottom third of our verified, tested printers.

  • No automatic duplex printing
    • The lack of automatic duplex printing makes this printer less convenient.

  • No Ethernet connectivity
    • Although the ET-2840 has WiFi, WiFi Direct, Hi-Speed USB, Apple AirPrint, and Mopria, it’s missing an Ethernet port for wired network connectivity.

Their meager printing cost and impressive page yield make the Epson EcoTank ET-2840 Special Edition and Epson EcoTank ET-15000 perfect for offices and families with extensive printing requirements. Although the ET-2840 has much better color accuracy than the ET-15000 for pleasing color prints, the latter’s swifter mono and color printing speeds are apt for moderately fast-paced environments.

The Epson EcoTank ET-2840 Special Edition has a lower print resolution and slightly lower color accuracy than the Epson EcoTank ET-8500, making it less preferable for outstanding color prints. The ET-8500 also offers speedier printing than the ET-2840 but costs much more. For more information, read our Epson EcoTank ET-8500 review.

The Epson EcoTank ET-2840 Special Edition’s faster print speeds suit moderately busy work environments more than the Canon Pixma G7020. However, the G7020 has automatic duplex printing for greater convenience than the ET-2840’s manual duplex printing, and it also holds more sheets than the ET-2840. For in-depth coverage, check out our Canon Pixma G7020 review.
