Editor’s Choice ASTRO Gaming A50 – Best Gaming Headset

best-gaming-headset-editors-choicePrice: $299.99 | Surround Sound: Dolby 7.1

Why we picked it: It’s wireless, offers incredible sound and an exceptional mic, easily making it our top pick for gaming headsets in 2019.

It’s no surprise that this is an incredibly competitive field with a lot of great options, but ultimately I’m giving this one to the ASTRO Gaming A50 wireless gaming headset. This is simply the best gaming headset you can find on the market. ASTRO Gaming loves to design edgy and angular products that look like they belong in tournaments, and the look is nice, but what you really need to know is that is has amazing sound quality plus the much-valued ASTRO Audio V2, which delivers premium audio that’s fine tuned specifically for gaming. Definitely spend some time tinkering with this headset if you want to customize your sound levels.

The earcups are quite comfortable and eschew the “pleather” look that’s so popular, which I find refreshing. The microphone uses top technology for ideal, never-annoying communication and flip-to-mute functionality. However, to get the best headset for PC or console, you’ll have to pay for the best, which is why this headset tends to cost around $300.

Best Wireless Gaming Headset SteelSeries Arctis 7

The best wireless headset, offering excellent performance and with it a great value.

Price: $112.86 | Surround Sound: 7.1 (PC only)

Why we picked it: Lossless wireless functionality and an uber-clear mic make this headphone a winner – and frankly, it’s great to see a lighter, more comfortable headset that still sounds so good.

SteelSeries has always been a fierce competitor in the world of high-end gaming headphones, and we can see that in the SteelSeries Arctis 7 wireless headset. Despite that lightweight design, this headset offers full 7.1 surround sound on PC and a great companion software (called SteelSeries Engine) that allows to you to customize your headphones’ sound for specific games, as well as specific apps like Discord and Spotify.

The customization features, however, are only part of the good news. Not only is this headset comfortable to wear and more durable than many high-end headphones, but the price isn’t astronomical either. Sitting just above $100 at the time of this review, the SteelSeries Arctis 7 is a great wireless choice for anyone on a budget.

Best Gaming Headset Under $100 Logitech G533

The Logitech G533 gaming headset is perfect for anyone on a budget.

Price: $69.99 | Surround Sound: 7.1

Why we picked it: Breathable mesh earcups and full wireless functionality for an affordable price bring this headset to the top.

The Logitech G533 is one of the best gaming peripherals we’ve seen, period. It offers unparalleled game audio with DTS 7.1 surround sound made specifically for headphones, giving you the upper hand against your opponents. Pair that with fine-tune audio controls, and you’ll never be surprised again in a battle. While these are some weighty headphones, that stereo surround sound is unparalleled right out of the box.

The EQ modes here are handy but nothing special – and they don’t really need to be, with such overall high fidelity and sound spacing. The mic I found much more impressive, able to clearly pick up my voice without getting too much in the way, and no notable distortion. All in all, if you can handle the weight, these massive headphones will deliver an incredibly immersive experience.

Best Gaming Headset for PS4 HyperX Cloud Revolver S

Price: $117.00 | Surround Sound: 7.1

Why we picked it: The studio-grade sound and memory foam earcups, plus the relatively lightweight design, make these headphones ideal for PS4 gamers.

If you are looking for a new headset for your beloved Playstation 4, you need to try the HyperX Cloud Revolver S headphones. In many ways this is like a lighter version of the Ear Force XO Seven, but designed for the PS4. This PS4 headset includes an advanced USB audio control box with a built-in DSP sound card for the ultimate immersive experience. The bass boost is hit or miss, but microphone monitoring is always handy for conscientious team play. The earcups are made from memory foam and super comfortable. Even better, they can be swapped out if you ever wear them out. And with a durable steel frame, you can be sure this stereo gaming headset will last for a while.

Best Gaming Headset for Xbox One Razer Kraken Tournament Edition

Price: $74.50 |Surround Sound: 7.1

Why we picked it: THX 7.1 surround sound and solid controls make this headset stand out.

If you’re looking for the best Xbox One headset with the looks to match, then the Razer Kraken Tournament Edition headset is for you. This is another hotly contested area, but the THX 7.1 surround sound and retractable noise cancelling mic really put this one ahead of the pack. Plus, the alien green certainly doesn’t hurt.

You get great sound, broad compatibility for different platforms, and some very nice low latency. The mic is a little gimmicky but I like how easy it was to switch between team and solo play modes. You will likely experience some pretty weak highs on the audio and the lightweight build sometimes feels too flimsy, but these are relatively small quibbles for a headset that provides amazing sound.

Why You Should Trust Me

I’ve been gaming for years.  I’ve tried a whole host of headsets, which have been worn out through use, ditched for better versions, and occasionally thrown across the room. When it comes to headphones, I’ve worked my way through brand-recommended options and third-party sound products, while simultaneously working my way through raids, war zones, and fantasy worlds.

You know all those things that make headphones annoying? The mic “heavy breathing” feedback, the slow aching slip of earcups down your neck, the disappointing “teeny voice” directional sound that takes you out of gameplay? Those have happened to me, too. So after reviewing multiple headsets, I have a vested interest in finding some headphones that don’t disappoint.

In other words, I know what goes into a sweet pair of gaming headphones, and I’m happy to let you benefit from my expertise and findings over the years. Get ready for the final word on 2015 gaming headsets.

Features We Compared

If you are wondering what factors we take into account when reviewing the best gaming headsets, well – we take a look at everything. But the features  important to your gaming experience include:

  1. Frequency:
    • First, the frequency range shows what sounds speakers can produce – all headphones tend to have a broad range, dipping down to the bass range (around 20 Hz at the lowest) and reaching up toward 20 kHz.
    • However, frequency is also measured in terms of response, or how accurately headphones can reproduce sounds at the frequency they should be.
    • Look for headphones that have accurate response throughout as much of the frequency range as possible.
  2. Sensitivity:
    • Headphones with high sensitivity will use their watts effectively to give big increases in sound every time you turn up the volume.
    • Low sensitivity headphones may not be able to go all the way to 11.
    • If you love your big sound, look for high sensitivity headsets.
  3. Speaker Drivers:
    • Speaker drivers are typically measured in millimeters, which is why you may see specs like “50mm drivers.”
    • The general rule here is that a larger driver will give you more of that sexy bass sound in the lower frequency ranges, but may struggle more at the higher frequency ranges.
  4. Surround Sound:
    • Be it 5.1 or 7.1, the key here is to find a headset that provides not only realistic surround sound, but compelling surround.
    • A good surround headset will provide both an immersive gaming experience, but one that allows you to detect your foes based on position, which can sometimes be key to winning the battle.
    • Look for “7.1 virtual surround sound” when possible.
  5. Mic Quality:
    • How well does that mic work? Does it make your voice sound fuzzy and distorted, or does it allow for smooth, automatic communication with your teammates.
    • To that end, how easy is it to position the mic relative to your face.  And can it cancel out ambient sound or sound from the game itself?
    • Your teammates will never applaud you for a quality mic, but they’ll be sure to berate you for a bad one.
  6. Sound Latency:
    • Latency is all about how sound is transmitted.
    • High latency means that sound will be delayed, may jump around, and could speed up or slow down unexpectedly.
    • Good gaming headphones will have low latency.
  7. On-Board Features:
    • While this feature may not be the deciding factor, it’s still something to be cognezant of.
    • For instance, separate volume and mic controls on the headset can be great when you need to make quick on-the-fly adjustments.
  8. Earcup Size and Materials:
    • You’ll likely be gaming for hours, so you’ll want to ensure that your gaming headset is comfortable.
    • That faux-leather may feel great now, but what if it’s a low-quality material that starts to crack and tear in a year? Foam and gel both tend to affect sound in different ways (gel can enhance bass more easily), but also feel differently on the ear.
    • Preference is important here, but look for thick, highly-quality outer coverings that won’t wear through easily.
  9. Wireless or Wired:
    • Wired headphones are less likely to struggle with latency and often have the best sound quality, while wireless headphones offer great range of motion and may be more comfortable.
    • For the overall experience, wired headphones still hold the upper hand. When picking wireless headphones, look for surround sound and easy recharging options.

Which Gaming Headset Is Right For You?

When it comes to headphones, sound is King, which is why the Beyerdynamic MMX 300 headphones is the best for all sorts of PC gaming. However, the way that the headset fits around your ears and rests on your head is also important, which is why the Sennheiser G4ME ONE headphones also gets a lot of love. If you’re looking for Xbox headphones, start browsing Turtle Beach Ear Force headsets, because sometimes a company with experience in a certain console will just treat you right.

When looking for headsets for more general use, remember to watch for 7.1 virtual surround sound, dedicated sound cards, and great frequency response. This makes it easy to spot high quality sound no matter what product you are looking at. Also, keep in mind that your ears know best, so when possible head to a store and see if you can try on headphones in person if you are making a tough decision.

  1. Yassir

Is the Astro A50 compatible with Xbox 360?

  2. Claudio

xbox 360 has 5.1 optical output. so you need wireless heaphones with a hub with optical input.
so you can transmit that signal to the headphones and have 5.1

i only saw that Mad katz warhead has this and is not listed, and some wireless sony heaphones have optical input but i don`know if the internal circuits decode that signal into stereo and then send it to the headphones. you should do a review about this. thank you

    Hi Tyler…

you said: If you’re looking for Xbox headphones, start browsing Turtle Beach headsets… i´m looking for a xbox headphones 7.1 that works with other devices too… under $100 (max $120) what is your advice? thanks a lot!!!… i need to buy today!!!…

    • Tyler Lacoma

The funny thing about Turtle Beach is that there’s a sharp line between “wireless with surround sound” and “no wireless, no surround sound.” At $120 or less, you probably won’t be able to get a Turtle Beach with surround sound. However, I DO recommend the more affordable Turtle Beach Ear Force XO Seven Pro model, which is a very high quality headset with great directional sound, even if it doesn’t officially have “real” surround sound: http://www.amazon.com/Turtle-Beach-Force-Stealth-Gaming-Headset/dp/B00Q5JD2DM?tag=gadgetreviewc-20
