In addition to updating their Powerbooks, the busy guys at Apple have released new Power Mac G5’s today. The new Power Mac’s are getting an impressive new feature — the processors will now be dual core. And when you consider the high end Power Mac is dual processor, you effectively have 4 processing units. Hence the clever marketing name, the “Power Mac G5 Quad.”
What else can we expect from these new machines?
- PCI Express
- up to 16GB of 533MHz DDR2 SDRAM
- Two Gigabit Ethernet ports
- Mighty Mouse included
- GeForce 6600 (128MB or 256MB)
Not a bad upgrade in this pre Intel days. The high end Power Mac G5 Quad won’t be available until November, but the other 2 will be shipping now. Retail prices for the new machines are:
- Single Dual-Core G5 2.0GHz: $1,999
- Single Dual-Core G5 2.3GHz: $2,499
- Dual Dual-Core G5 2.5GHz: $3,299
