The ASUS VG279QM offers excellent value for money for those seeking an ultra-smooth gaming experience on a limited budget. But it’s unsuitable if visuals are a priority because of its low resolution, contrast, and color coverage.

Product Snapshot

Overview

Released in 2020, the ASUS VG279QM is a mid-range gaming monitor with an IPS panel and a 1920 x 1080 resolution. This 27” monitor supports variable refresh rates (VRR), FreeSync, and NVIDIA G Sync, and ports include a DisplayPort 1.2 port and two HDMI 2.0 ports but no HDMI 2.1. It has 382 nits of brightness, but the best computer monitors can get as bright as 1000 nits.

You get many adjustability options, like height adjustment, tilt, swivel, rotation, and wall mounting. Lastly, the monitor’s 280 Hz refresh rate is higher than some of the best gaming monitors.

Consensus

our Verdict

The ASUS VG279QM has satisfactory picture quality. Its 382 nits brightness is slightly above average, ranking in the top third of our certified, tested monitors, but visuals aren’t striking because of its low contrast (1186:1) and resolution (full HD) and limited 80.2% color coverage on the DCI P3 xy. With some calibration, color accuracy is superb (0.44 dE), and despite some grey during dark scenes, there’s nearly no backlight bleed.

The 6.6 ms response time ranks below average but is apt for casual gaming, while the 2.2 ms input lag is swift enough for competitive gaming. The 280 Hz refresh rate is outstanding for smooth, tear-free visuals during fast-paced gaming, and the adjustability options (height, tilt, swivel, and rotation) greatly enhance ergonomics. There are two HDMI 2.0 ports but no HDMI 2.1 for console gaming.

ReasonS to Buy

  • Ultra-low input lag
    • The ASUS VG279QM is a speedy monitor for casual and competitive gamers on a limited budget.

    • Its ultra-low 2.2 ms input lag is outstanding for competitive gaming and ranks near the top of our verified, tested list.

  • Remarkable refresh rate
    • There is no screen tearing, and fast-moving visuals are smooth thanks to the 280 Hz refresh rate, which is incredibly high.

Reason to Avoid

  • Average image quality
    • The picture quality is average because of the limited resolution (1920 x 1080) and color accuracy (80.2% coverage of the DCI P3 xy), which ranks among the lowest in our certified, tested list.

    • The 382 nits brightness is slightly above average, ranking in the top third of our certified, tested monitors, and there’s almost no backlight bleed. Still, the visuals aren’t striking due to low contrast (1186:1). With some calibration, color accuracy is great (0.44 dE).

  • Slightly below-average response time
    • The 6.6 ms response time is good for casual gaming but ranks slightly below average in our certified, tested roster and isn’t recommended for competitive games.

  • Limited connectivity ports
    • You get a DisplayPort 1.2 port and two HDMI 2.0 ports, but no HDMI 2.1 means you can’t enjoy high-frame rates with console and high-end PC gaming.

The ASUS VG279QM is a 27” mid-range gaming monitor, while the ASUS Rog Strix XG49VQ is a 49” premium ultra-wide. With its higher resolution, wider display, and better picture quality, the XG49VQ is more suitable for improved gaming immersion and multitasking. But the VG279QM’s higher refresh rate and lower input lag make it a better choice for competitive gamers on a limited budget. To learn more, read our ASUS Rog Strix XG49VQ review here.

The ASUS VG279QM and the ASUS XG27AQM are 27” gaming monitors, but while the VG279QM is for gamers on a budget, the upper mid-range XG27AQM is for gamers seeking a more visually stunning display. The VG279QM offers higher refresh rates and brightness and a considerably lower input lag for smoother gaming, but the XG27AQM’s 2K resolution is superior to the VG279QM (full HD). The ASUS VG279QM and the Acer Predator XB272 are 27” full HD monitors, but the VG279QM is a better option overall because of its lower price and higher contrast and refresh rate. Although the XB272 has more USB ports, the VG279QM supports HDMI 2.0. For an in-depth analysis, consider our Acer Predator XB272 review.

The ASUS VG279QM brings several key improvements over the ASUS VG279Q, including much higher refresh rates, speedier response time and input lag, and HDR support. The VG279QM is also more durable and has deeper blacks, but the older VG279Q has a slightly higher contrast.
