Dell, known for their low-cost PCs, announced on Wednesday they would be entering the high end market with their new XPS line. Both desktops and laptops will be available in the new sexy, powerful XPS brand.

The XPS desktop PCs will ship with dual-core Intel processors, Nvidia graphics cards, hard drives up to 1 terabte in data, and 17″ flat screens. Prices start at $1,099.

The XPS laptops will ship with a 17″ screen and a processor up to 2.26 GHz. Prices start at $2,699.

The XPS machines will ship running Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005, but are compatabile with Microsoft’s upcoming operating system code-named Vista.

Will these high end machines put Dell in the same category previously dominated by companies like Alienware and Apple? I know the shiny XPS logo branded on each machine has me sold.
