Computer Monitor Test Data & Results

1. Contrast Ratio (as ratio, x:1) Test Results

Contrast ratio is responsible for making images appear “dynamic” and “dramatic.” By having a good contrast ratio, a monitor is able to recreate dramatic differences between light and dark spots in scenes, images and games accurately. Dynamic contrast ratio is important as well, as it enhances these differences further, providing even more depth and realism to visuals.

At a minimum, we recommend a contrast ratio of 1000:1, as this will do a good enough job at allow for detail in dark scenes and images. If contrast ratio gets too low, the picture quality suffers, and the monitor performs worse across the board, no matter the lighting condition. By getting a monitor with a sufficiently high contrast ratio, you can ensure the picture quality doesn’t suffer, and dramatic scenes with stark shifts in lighting, whether they be in games or videos, are created as accurately as possible. For professionals, choose a monitor ideal for video editing which supports high contrast ratios so that what you see on screen closely matches the final video output.

Contrast Ratio (higher is better)

2. Color Gamut/Accuracy % (DCI P3 xy) Test Results

Color gamut is responsible for making a monitor produce accurate colors when displaying a variety of content. The DCI P3 xy gamut is considered a “standard” gamut of sorts, and is used to help color grade films. Most HDR content will use this gamut at the very least (though other gamut exist) and it’s a commonly used gamut for films. Good HDR monitors excel at displaying a wide range of colors and high dynamic range.

When it comes to a computer monitor, having a panel that covers at least 90% of the DCI P3 gamut means it’ll output accurate colors when watching HDR content and movies that use the gamut. If a monitor doesn’t cover enough of the gamut, it causes color inaccuracies and shifts the image quality. If you care about maintaining accuracy in the movies you watch on your monitor so they look the way they were intended, this gamut needs to be properly covered.

Best OLED Monitors: Mistakes To Avoid

  1. Ignoring Burn-In Risk: OLED displays are susceptible to burn-in, where static images displayed for extended periods can cause permanent image retention. Be mindful of this risk, especially if you plan to use the monitor for tasks involving static elements like menus or logos. Consider using screensavers which you can setup in your display settings or varying content to mitigate the risk of burn-in.

  2. Overlooking Price Considerations: OLED monitors tend to be more expensive than their LCD counterparts due to the complexity of OLED technology and manufacturing costs. Consider your budget and whether the premium price is justified by the superior picture quality and features offered by OLED displays. If you’re a gamer, make sure to decide whether a 1080p or 4K monitor is better for your gaming.

  3. Not Checking Screen Size and Resolution: Ensure the OLED monitor’s screen size and resolution meet your requirements for viewing comfort and productivity. Consider factors such as display size (e.g., 24″ vs 27″ monitors), aspect ratio, and resolution (e.g., 4K, 8K) to determine the optimal balance between screen real estate and pixel density.

  4. Neglecting Color Accuracy and Calibration: OLED displays are known for their exceptional color accuracy and wide color gamut, making them popular among professionals in industries like graphic design, photography, and video production. However, ensure the monitor offers color calibration options or supports calibration devices to achieve accurate and consistent colors for your work. If you play video games, make sure you know how to calibrate your monitor for your gaming as well.
