    Our Verdict

The Dell S3222DGM offers solid performance and 1440p resolution at an extremely affordable price. At 337.14 nits, it’s bright enough for most office environments without losing clarity and fidelity from ambient light.

The monitor also boasts an excellent contrast ratio of 4282.5:1, promising deep blacks and vivid colors, but the lack of HDR support limits you to more standard web content. On the plus side, the Dell S3222DGM shines in the realm of color accuracy, with an sRGB Color Gamut coverage of 98.10% and a DCI P3 xy Color Gamut coverage of 85%. This is excellent if you’re a graphic designer or photographer looking to do photo editing or web design on your monitor.

The high refresh rate of 165Hz provides smoother visuals that are particularly beneficial for gaming. However, while its response time of 5ms is fantastic, the input lag of 18.25ms won’t satisfy your competitive gaming needs, and you’ll need something more responsive.

The Dell S3222DGM is a reliable choice if you’re looking for a cost-effective 1440p monitor without compromising quality. It may not be a great option for HDR content, but it offers outstanding value and excellent performance, making it an extremely flexible monitor that can reliably handle web design, spreadsheeting, and general productivity.

Which Criteria Matters for Testing Best 1440p Monitors?

By focusing on these criteria (2 required), anyone can quickly and easily compare these computer monitors and how they’ll perform. This helps you make an informed decision and purchase the best 1440p monitor.

Contrast Ratio>2000:1YesThe difference in brightness between the whites (lit sections) and blacks (dim or unlit sections) of a monitor panel.

  1. Samuel Breton – Rtings, MuckRack
  2. Chris Eberle – Tom’s Hardware, LinkedIn
  3. Tony Hoffman – PC Mag, MuckRack

Interested in a comprehensive analysis of our data sources? We’ve got you covered. Below, you’ll find a detailed list of every computer monitor review website we’ve identified, organized by their respective Trust Ratings from highest to lowest. But we didn’t stop there. We’ve meticulously reviewed each publication and verified the data by checking whether the authors have bio links to MuckRack or LinkedIn. We’re committed to not only checking the facts but ensuring their veracity.

Computer Monitor Test Data & Results

1. Contrast Ratio (as ratio, x:1) Test Results

Contrast ratio is responsible for making images appear “dynamic” and “dramatic.” By having a good contrast ratio, a monitor is able to recreate dramatic differences between light and dark spots in scenes, images and games accurately.

At a minimum, we recommend a contrast ratio of 2000:1, as this will do a good enough job at allow for detail in dark scenes and images. If contrast ratio gets too low, the picture quality suffers, and the monitor performs worse across the board, no matter the lighting condition. By getting a monitor with a sufficiently high contrast ratio, you can ensure the picture quality doesn’t suffer, and dramatic scenes with stark shifts in lighting, whether they be in games or videos, are created as accurately as possible.

Contrast Ratio (higher is better)

2. Color Gamut % (sRGB Coverage xY) Test Results

Since color gamut comes in a variety of different types, there’s bound to be some confusion as to which is meant for what. sRGB is an extremely common gamut that is used for the vast majority of web content, including how YouTube videos display, and is the primary gamut used for video games.

If you’re looking for accurate colors while web browsing, watching videos or playing games, you’re going to want a coverage of at least 85%. Higher is always better and hitting 100% means that if you correctly calibrate your monitor, you should be seeing content exactly as it was intended. Higher than 100% means that more than just the standard gamut has been covered, which can create more saturated and vivid colors. Coming in under 100% means the colors are less accurate, though this doesn’t become a major issue until you start to fall under 90%.

Best 1440p Monitors: Mistakes To Avoid

  1. Ignoring refresh rate and response time: While resolution is important, don’t overlook other critical factors like refresh rate and response time. For gaming or fast-paced tasks, a monitor with a higher refresh rate (e.g., 144Hz monitors or higher) and lower response time (e.g., 1ms) can provide smoother motion and reduce motion blur. If you still want a 1440p monitor, we recommend several top-rated 1440p 144hz monitor models that will be great additions to your setup. There are even 240Hz gaming monitors that offer very smooth motion, though keep in mind that not everybody needs the highest refresh rate. Consider your usage needs before making a decision solely based on resolution.

  2. Overlooking panel type: Different panel types, such as IPS, TN, and VA, offer varying characteristics in terms of color accuracy, viewing angles, and response times. IPS panels typically provide better color reproduction and wider viewing angles, making them suitable for tasks like content creation and photo editing. TN panels, on the other hand, offer faster response times and are often preferred by gamers for their low input lag. Consider your priorities and usage scenarios when choosing the panel type.

  3. Not considering connectivity options: Ensure the monitor has the necessary ports to connect to your devices, such as HDMI, DisplayPort, and USB. If you have specific connectivity needs, such as USB-C or multiple inputs, make sure the monitor meets those requirements.

  4. Neglecting ergonomic features: Ergonomic features like height adjustment, tilt, swivel, and pivot can significantly impact your comfort, especially during extended use. Look for monitors with adjustable stands or VESA mounting compatibility to optimize your viewing experience.
