Sony Launches PRS-700 Touchscreen Digital Reader

E-readers are nothing new, but Sony stepped it up today with the introduction of the touchscreen PRS-700. Sporting similar dimensions and svelteness of the original Sony e-reader, the PRS-700’s 6-inch screen allows readers to intuitively flip through a book, magazine or newspaper by sliding their finger across the screen.  Happen across an interesting article?  No problem, just call up the virtual keyboard or use the stylus to jot a note.  They’ve also tossed in a bed partner friendly LED reading light for night time witch stories.  Total memory has been bumped allowing for up to 350 e-books, which is further expandable via SD or Memory Stick duo cards.

Sony Ericsson Greenheart Concept Phone Is A Big Step In The Green Direction

With people refreshing their kit ever year, to year and a half, it means truck loads of used and unwanted electronics.  Recycling is such a massive undertaking here in California that we pay a recycling fee anytime we buy a cell phone, mp3 player, etc.  Sony Ericsson, with all this in mind, has developed a concept phone that is constructed of eco friendly materials.  It features a bio plastic housing, recycle keypads, e-manuals, and recycled packaging. The phone your seeing is purely conceptual and is intended to serve as a benchmark for SE and other companies of the same ilk.

Of note, with the advent of software upgradeable phones we’ll hopefully begin to see longer refresh cycles on people’s equipment.

Nintendo Launches Dual Touchscreen DS With 3MP Camera, Calls It DSi

As the rumors suspected, two of them in fact, Nintendo unveiled a dual touchscreen DS with a built-in 3 megapixel external camera in addition to an internal camera, which is probably a lower rez.  No word on the MP3 part of the rumor, but seems likely considering the new feature set.  Called the DSi, it’s 12% thinner than the current DS, does away with the GBA cartridge slot, and features larger touchscreens (that should read two) at 3.25-inch.  To complement the new DSi, Nintendo is launching an online store for purchasing content, via Nintendo points, that can be accessed via WiFi.

The new DSi launches in Japan on November 1st for about $178.  The US, and the rest of the World will have to wait until next year.

Toshiba’s Newest Media Server Uses NFC

The details are lacking, but from what I’ve inferred, Toshiba has been working on a home media server that will sit at the center of your entertainment center. The polygon shaped device uses NFC, or near field communication, to tell when compatible devices are within proximity for sucking down relevant media.  It then beams the information to your HD TV.  Unfortunatley, the device is conceptual, but one can hope.

Tenori-On Midi Like Sequencer Is One Crazy Gadget

This is probably one of the oddest pieces of kit I’ve ever seen. Unlike most gadgets, its utilitarian value is far from transparent. So what’s it do? The Tenori-On, made by Yamaha, is a midi sequencer of sorts that pulls audio files from an SD card. The audio is represented by LEDs, which can be touched to influence the sequence.

Believe it or not, you can buy one today for $1,200 here.

I like ogling beautiful things, and the Cowon S9 Curve is right up there with my favorite centerfolds and Apple products. This slick little PMP sports a 3.3-inch touch screen (480 x 272) with 16 million colors, 8-16GB of storage, 500-Mhz dual-core CPU, T-DMB tuner, Bluetooth, FM radio, TV-out, accelerometer and a whopping 40 hour music playback battery life with a 6 hour charge time. There’s rumored to be a 32GB in the works as well.

Unfortunately, there’s no word on price or availability.

Update: Sources say the S9 should hit sometime this November.
