The contest for best original content is a tough one, but HBO’s work in this area cannot be denied. Game of Thrones, Westworld, Veep, True Detective, Watchmen, and many other shows are familiar to everyone, and there’s no other place you can catch them except HBO Now. How We Decided

Well, we sat down and watched some TV! Really, the best way to review a streaming service is to jump in and explore all it has to offer, moving through different categories and settings to see what we like. This is a great way to both test out the interface and see how it functions (finding titles, recommendations, etc.) and see just what content the service offers – the variety and span of each category.

Then it’s time for a deeper dive with several very important questions. Is there a great kid’s section for the service for parents? (Disney has an obvious answer, Netflix is surprisingly competent here, etc.). Can you watch live events, especially things that are meant to be watched live like sports? How well does the service update its shows – do you have to wait a day, a week, or a year to catch the latest season of your favorite show. And, of course, one of the most popular questions: How much does it cost per month, and how does that compare with other fees?

Then we focused on technical aspects. For example, are 4k and HDR supported for high quality viewing on your big screen TV? Is it easy to filter content if necessary? How does playback – starting, stopping, and rewinding – work? Can you enable additional audio features if necessary? Is streaming itself smooth, especially for those who may have broadband issues? We added all this together to get an excellent look at exactly what these streaming services can do.

The Most Important Features to Consider

1. Content
   What sort of content do you want? There’s some overlap here, mostly between Hulu and Netflix, but generally each streaming service has very unique content. Amazon has some great sci-fi, Hulu has lots of mainstream network shows, Netflix specializes in popular older shows and plentiful movies – everything is a little different. So think about the TV you watch now, and what you would most like to see on a streaming service. Then look at what each service provides.
2. Original Content
   These days you also have to think about what original content the services offer – new shows and movies you can’t find anywhere else. Netflix is the undisputed king here, offering tons of original shows and movies plus ongoing content that’s updated weekly. There’s really nothing else like it. Hulu has original content as well, but far less, and it tends to be a lot quirkier. Amazon, meanwhile, is focusing on a low number of very high quality shows (Mrs. Maisel, The Boys, etc.) to catch up to the rest. Disney is essentially all original content, albeit some was once available elsewhere, and HBO is a mix of original shows (Westworld, Watchmen, and so on) and movies on demand. Everyone else falls far behind.
3. How Soon Content is Available
   This is particularly important for those viewers who want to catch up on current shows as soon as possible, or watch live events. Sling TV and ESPN are the best for watching live TV of various kinds, although they do have their limits (apps like Hulu also have periodic live events but this isn’t quite the same thing). For keeping up on shows you can’t watch live, Hulu is the current master. Many shows are updated regularly soon after they air live. If you want to catch up on something like the latest episode of What We Do In the Shadows, Hulu is the place to go. Netflix, meanwhile, tends to get full seasons of shows 6 months to a year after they air, so it’s not great for getting content fast. The exception is Netflix’s own content, which tends to get new seasons every six months or so, though this can vary.
4. Interface and Layout
   Streaming services (sometimes called live tv streaming services) have a lot of content, which means organizing is and searching through it is very important. Look for services that have easy menus and clear categorization that’s very easy for you to understand and move through. This is somewhat personal, but we find that Netflix generally has the best layout and controls, while Hulu has the worst.
5. Compatibility with Streaming Devices and a Smart TV
   This is a lesser feature that’s still important for your devices. If you run all your apps on, for example, an iPad or PlayStation, there probably won’t be much difference in compatibility. Everything works just fine. But sometimes apps have lots of synergy with each other: Using a Fire TV Stick with Amazon Prime Video, for example, is an optimal experience because they are both from the same brand. Alternatively, there are a variety of smart tvs on the market that have most if not all the necessary compatible apps, such as a TCL or Roku TV.
6. Bundles and Add-Ons
   Bundles are a great way to save…if you can find them. The best example right now is bundling Disney’s services like Hulu, Disney and ESPN into one versatile bundle with a much lower cost and something for everyone. You should also pay attention to add-ons and upgrades. Netflix allows you to switch to 4k content when possible – for a price. Sling TV allows you to add on kid’s channels and many other packages. It’s all worth a look.
