HDTV — 16 February 2009

While most TVs draw power when they are turned off, Sony’s new Bravia WE5 has a switch on it that will reduce power consumption to zero watts when turned off. But that’s not the only thing this HDTV can do to save power. Additionally, the WE5 uses the worlds first micro-tubular HCFL backlight that cuts active power consumption by 50 percent. But wait there’s more! The WE5 also has a motion/heat “Smart Presence Sensor” that detects if you leave the room for awhile and will shut the screen down. There is going to be 40 and 46 inch versions arriving in the UK this spring, but no word yet on pricing or US availability. While the whole TV making process is definitely not green as an operation, this is a step in the right direction.
