Arnco-Sargent Elementary sits on a two-lane road in rural Georgia. Woods, a Baptist church, a child care center. About 357 kids, nearly 60% living in poverty. Then this April, Coweta County commissioners rezoned 832 acres directly across the street for a hyperscale AI data centers campus that could take a decade to build. Brown University researchers have now identified 1,878 U.S. public schools within a mile of an existing or approved data center—and their forthcoming paper links that proximity to lower math scores. The cloud isn’t weightless. It has an address, and it’s moving in next to kids’ schools.
What’s Actually Moving In Next Door
The numbers paint a picture that tree buffers and sound berms can’t fully hide.
California leads the country with 602 schools near data centers—32% of the national total—according to Brown University’s analysis of Business Insider and NCES data. A separate GIS analysis suggests nearly 80% of U.S. data centers sit within two miles of a school, and no national standard governs minimum distance between these facilities and classrooms. Key concerns include:
- Diesel backup generators, described by environmental advocates as “a bunch of semi trucks idling right next to the school”
- Thermal heat islands extending six miles, raising local temperatures by as much as 9°F—enough to cancel recess and spike air-conditioning costs simultaneously
Urban cores lack cheap acreage, so developers target suburban and exurban land near existing AI infrastructure—places that, inconveniently, contain schools and neighborhoods. Georgia’s generous tax exemptions sweeten the deal further. Dan Diorio of the Data Center Coalition argues that proximity makes data load faster, benefiting everything from healthcare to classroom technology. That logic lands differently for the children who are the classroom.

Brown researcher Samantha Kane says her team ruled out confounding regional factors—the math score drop traces directly to data center proximity. The on-the-ground reality sharpens the finding. In northeast Louisiana, an elementary school shut down its playground because thousands of cement trucks were daily servicing what’s expected to be Meta’s largest data center. At least one truck smashed into the school gate.
Communities Are Fighting Back – and Occasionally Winning
From rural Georgia to Palm Beach County, parents are discovering that NIMBYism has migrated from wind farms to server farms.
- Citizens for Rural Coweta is suing the county over Project Sail and circulating a referendum petition nearing 14,000 signatures.
- Palm Beach County rejected Project Tango—a 202-acre proposal that would have landed a football field from Saddle View Elementary—though developers may revise and resubmit.
- In Henrico County, Virginia, 37 data centers strain the local grid so significantly that officials asked the school district to absorb a $5 million energy cost increase.

No national siting standards exist. New York imposed a moratorium. Virginia passed a consumption tax on data centers. Everyone else is improvising. Arnco-Sargent isn’t an outlier—it’s a preview.
