That is exactly what happened when a Japanese retro-tech blogger documented the full process of connecting Sony’s current-gen console to a vintage black-and-white set, proving the feat is possible, repeatable, and genuinely strange to witness.
The Adapter Chain That Bridges Decades
Three consumer adapters separate a 4K gaming console from a postwar television, and somehow the signal survives all of them.
The PS5 outputs a digital HDMI signal; the vintage television accepts only analog RF through an earphone-style antenna jack. Nothing about those two facts is compatible, which is where the adapter chain earns its keep.
First, an HDMI-to-composite converter translates the PS5’s digital signal into analog composite video, the familiar yellow-RCA format. Before committing to the full pipeline, the blogger verified this step by routing the composite output through a Game Gear with a TV-tuner module, a satisfying sanity check that confirmed the PS5 image was intact before things got more complicated.

What the experiment actually proves is more interesting: modern digital consoles remain electrically compatible with analog-era displays when the signal formats are bridged correctly.
