Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced a Midnight Black PS5 Digital Edition for Japan, launching November 19, 2026, the same day Rockstar Games releases Grand Theft Auto 6. The console is restricted to Japanese use, locked to Japanese-language settings, and requires a Japan-region PlayStation account.
What Sony Is Actually Releasing
A new color, a matching controller, and the same core hardware underneath.
The console replaces the standard white exterior with a Midnight Black finish and includes a matching Midnight Black DualSense wireless controller. Sony says the model retains the PS5’s core performance features; the official announcement does not identify any performance upgrade over the existing Japanese Digital Edition.
The SSD is 825GB. The system language is Japanese-only, and the console supports digital PS5 titles and compatible PS4 games purchased through Japan’s PlayStation Store. Astro’s Playroom comes preinstalled.
Priced at ยฅ55,000 including tax (approximately $347 at current exchange rates), the console covers the entry point. A matching Midnight Black Disc Drive sells separately on the same release date for ยฅ11,980 (approximately $76), bringing the combined list price to roughly ยฅ66,980, or about $424. Both dollar figures are approximate exchange-rate conversions, not Sony-listed prices.
Preorders open October 20, 2026, through participating Japanese retailers and online stores, according to Sony’s official announcement.
Sony’s official statement describes the model directly. Translated, Sony confirms this Midnight Black variant is, like the existing Japanese-language Digital Edition, a PS5 model limited to use within Japan.

The GTA 6 Connection and Its Limits
Sharing a release date is not the same as sharing a box.
November 19, 2026 is GTA 6‘s announced release date. Sony has not announced this console as a GTA 6 bundle or co-branded product, and no bundle or co-marketing agreement appears in the official PlayStation Blog announcement for the Midnight Black hardware.
The console is a colorway release that shares a calendar date with one of the most anticipated game launches in years. Nothing in Sony’s Midnight Black announcement connects the two beyond timing.
Who This Console Actually Works For
Japan’s regional restrictions make this a poor fit for international buyers.
If you are outside Japan, the restrictions here are serious. The console runs a Japanese-only interface and requires a PlayStation account with its region set to Japan. Sony has confirmed no international retail availability, according to its official announcement and reporting by Eurogamer.
The lower price point will attract attention from international PlayStation fans. The account and language requirements create real practical barriers for buyers willing to import, making this console poorly suited to most international use.
Why Sony Is Doing This
Japan’s gaming market has always required its own approach.
The product’s Japan-specific pricing, language lock, and regional account requirement position it as a targeted domestic offering rather than a global rollout. A lower-priced configuration with a distinct visual identity addresses local market conditions directly.
For Japanese PlayStation owners ready to buy a black PS5 at GTA 6‘s launch, this is a straightforward, affordable option. For everyone else, the language and account restrictions make it a poor practical choice without workarounds Sony has not acknowledged or supported.
