Large covered structures shaped like Apple’s first foldable iPhone sit on the plaza beside the glass cube, still wrapped as of October 22. Their final design remains unconfirmed; identification rests on shape and launch timing, not an official Apple reveal.
Photos shared on X show the oversized installations beside the iconic glass cube entrance. Apple’s first foldable iPhone goes on sale October 23, starting at $1,999 for the 256GB model. If you’re planning a purchase, browsing iPhone accessories ahead of time is worth considering.
Inside the Store, the Setup Goes Well Beyond a Standard Launch
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that Apple’s Fifth Avenue flagship is receiving an unusually large allocation of iPhone Duo units for demonstrations and displays.
Fifth Avenue is expected to receive more than 150 iPhone Duo units for demonstrations and displays, compared with roughly 20 at a standard Apple Store, according to Gurman. That figure refers to demonstration and display stock, not purchase inventory.
Reported store plans, as covered by MacRumors, describe a mechanical fixture designed to demonstrate the phone opening and closing, putting the foldable mechanism directly in front of shoppers. A MagSafe display stand is also expected to hold an unfolded iPhone Duo beside two conventional iPhones.
That side-by-side arrangement gives visitors a direct size and form comparison before committing $1,999. Untethered demo phones are reportedly part of the setup as well, letting shoppers test StandBy mode freely alongside dedicated equipment for preparing purchased devices.
These details come from reported store plans, not a confirmed Apple announcement.
The Demo Floor Is Not a Stock Room
More than 150 demonstration units at Fifth Avenue does not mean 150 phones are available for purchase.
Apple has warned that launch-day inventory will be limited in the United States and several other markets. Some international locations, including stores in mainland China, France, and Japan, are expected to require customers to reserve pickup times through Apple’s online store rather than simply walking in.
MacRumors reported that some Apple retail employees were instructed to discourage customers without preorders from visiting Fifth Avenue. Walk-in stock may not be available.
The installations are built to showcase the iPhone Duo. They are not a guarantee that you can take one home on launch day.
Apple Has Done This Before, Just Not at This Scale
The Fifth Avenue store has served as a visual stage for recent iPhone launches, and this one appears to be a considerably larger production.
Apple reportedly added color treatments to the glass cube for the iPhone 18 Pro launch in September, tying the store’s appearance to the device’s Burgundy and Glacier finishes. That detail comes from MacRumors and has not been independently corroborated. The current installations follow a similar pattern, though at a notably larger scale for Apple’s first foldable release.
Shoppers without a preorder may find no purchase stock available on October 23. Those looking to handle a foldable iPhone before committing $1,999 will find Fifth Avenue fully prepared for that purpose on launch day. Knowing the difference before heading to Midtown is worth a moment of reflection.
