New Apple Patent Called ‘Grab & Go’ Points To Wireless Sync On All Devices

November 5th, 2009 4:08 PM | by Christen da Costa

Apple Grab n Go Sync

Based on a patent filing, it looks like Apple is ready to enhance and elaborate on their wireless syncing system, MobileMe.

While it’s still not clear to which devices this would apply to – the application references everything from an Apple TV to an Apple computer – it’s relatively evident that Apple is looking to get us away from syncing our iPhones (and perhaps soon to be other wireless products) via USB cord.

Ultimately, this would make our lives more simple as we’d be able to have access to all our work files as well as our music and videos without performing the arduous syncing process.  The service would probably be a subscription based program and connect all our Mac products to the ‘cloud’, negating the need for not only syncing but at home storage, such as Apple’s Timemachine.

One huge probable caveat, though, would be the inability to hack said wireless products, such as we’ve seen with Jailbroken iPhones, since it’s probably fair to assume that Apple could just push an update to the device.  Then again, you could just opt to not subscribe to the service.

Then again, this system could be much more locally based – after all the name is ‘Grab & Go’ – such as an at home wireless network, but that seems so unlike Apple, given their desire for grandeur and all.

The HoverDrone: World’s Smallest Remote Controlled Flying Toy

November 3rd, 2009 10:41 AM | by Steve Anderson

mini-hover-drone

Got twenty bucks?  Easily entertained?  Then what I’ve got for you will quite literally blow your mind wide open.

It’s called the HoverDrone, and it’s a little toy hovercraft that actually hovers.

It’s not that much bigger around than a silver dollar, and it floats by generating its own cushion with a small fan on its undercarriage.  It also blinks a little blue LED.  But where this is interesting is not that it’s a tiny flight-capable toy, but rather that it’s the SMALLEST remote controlled flying device ever made.

No, really–it’s just over sixty millimeters in diameter, and it flies.  You can even control the height of the flight by remote, even if the remote is basically “up” and “down”.  And the best part is, you can have one of these for just about twenty bucks.  Even if you’re not that interested in flying a little blue toy with an LED light that blinks, well, it’s almost worth it just to have that piece of toy history in your hands.

RC Driver Tissue Box Drives Tissues To You

November 3rd, 2009 10:37 AM | by Steve Anderson

rc-tissue-box

Now this is actually a really fun idea–you know how, when you were a kid, you probably used to imagine various household objects as race cars?  Well, now you can do it for real with the RC Driver Tissue Box.

This isn’t just a fun idea, either.  It’s also highly useful.  I remember when I had the flu…I was on my back, barely able to move, and even something like getting up to go get a tissue to try and clear my nose sufficiently to breathe was like the labors of Sisyphus.  But the thought of being able to snag a remote and DRIVE my tissues to my sick bed makes me feel almost…happy, somehow.

But still, the idea of driving your tissues around the house is probably at least a minor freakout, so be careful.  It’d be terrible trying to, say, explain to the vet that you ran over your cat’s foot with a box of tissues.  They’re taking pre-orders on them now for $44, so get them before someone else does!

Gadget Leak: Flip Share TV Lets You View Your Home Movies Wirelessly

FlipShare TV-1

Although the details are few and far between, it looks like Flip, the folks behind those cutesy pocket sized camcorders, are about to release a set top box for the living room TV.  But unlike the Apple TV and a many set top boxes this one won’t be Internet connected, at least according to the pics.  Nope, you’ll plug a USB stick into your laptop and wireless stream your recorded films to the main unit and the third component will act as a remote.

Powermat - 12Powermat Review

When we saw Powermat’s offering at CES 2009 we were pretty excited.  After all, who doesn’t want to ditch the always cubersome plug in process for all their mobile gadgets.  But like most gadgets, especially those that offer a game changer to the industry, skepticism is abound.  So does the Powermat live up to all it promises to be? …Continue reading: Powermat Portable Mat Review

Little Buddy Child Tracker Is Commercial Quality Homing Device

October 29th, 2009 9:31 AM | by Steve Anderson

little-buddy

It’s…um…about ten thirty AM.  Do you know where your children are?

If you can’t answer yes to that, and even if you can, you may still want to get your hands on a Little Buddy Child Tracker from Insignia.

The Little Buddy Child Tracker does pretty much what it says on the box, and it tracks your children.  Relentlessly.  Like non stop.  You can get the location of the unit at pretty much any time from your cell phone.

Yes, it’s a homing device.  For children.  Now, you may want to start getting cranked up about how children aren’t branded cattle to be tracked relentlessly, though you’d probably love to have this on hand if something happened to Junior.  My concern, however, comes into play in the “misuse” category.  Like instead of, say, tracking Junior someone decides to track Tammy Stalkerbait down the street by slipping it in her car.

Are we as a society ready for tracking devices?  I’m not sure.  But we’ll find out if you can shell out a hundred bucks for your very own Little Buddy Child Tracker.

Yubz Magnum BlueTooth Speaker Review

Yubz Magnum Review

In a land where product names have nothing to do with anything, Yubz reigns supreme.  Put the word Magnum next to Yubz and now you’re onto something.

The Yubz Magnum is a wireless speaker that will connect to any BlueTooth device.  The Magnum is capable of playing music as well as acting as a hands-free loudspeaker for your cell phone.

Resembling a “pleather” meat log of sorts, the Yubz Magnum is a cylindrical device with speakers on both ends.  It feels really nice actually, and is soft and lightweight. …Continue reading: Yubz Magnum BlueTooth Speaker Review

Roku Launches HD-XR Netflix Player, Adds USB Port & 802.1nn

October 27th, 2009 2:00 PM | by Christen da Costa

Roku HD-XR

Just in time for the holidays, Roku has announced an all new Roku Player…sort of.  Actually, the HD-XR model just adds a USB port (not enabled) and support for 802.11n to the HD version of the box.  You can grab one now for $129.99 or opt for the now discounted SD version for $79.99.  For some the $30 for the HD-XR version might not be worth it, but for those streaming users that want to move their box further from their router it might make sense, and who knows, maybe that currently disabled USB port will actually facilitate not only local play from an attached hard drive but enable it to be a NAS.
