A single analyst report upended Apple hardware coverage this week, and almost none of the headlines got the story right. Research firm Omdia reported in early September 2026 that Apple has scrapped plans for a 16.1–18-inch foldable MacBook once tied to CEO John Ternus‘s priorities. Outlets ran with it. Apple, as usual, said nothing — because Apple has never publicly confirmed this product existed. The real question isn’t whether a foldable Mac ships in 2026. It’s whether Apple is still solving the harder problem underneath: the keyboard.
The Real Obstacle: Your Fingers
Replacing physical keys isn’t a display problem — it’s a fingertip problem, and Apple’s patent work reveals exactly how the company plans to solve it.
Apple’s filings describe a three-part strategy for making a flat screen feel convincingly like physical keys:
- A flexible display surface deforms slightly under fingertip pressure, with capacitive sensing tracking both depth and location.
- Haptic actuators beneath the surface simulate key travel and the tactile click of a registered keypress.
- Electrostatic charge patterns then create perceived texture across that otherwise flat surface, so touch-typists can feel virtual key edges without any physical ridge to guide them.
Researchers at Carnegie Mellon’s Future Interfaces Group — unrelated to Apple — have already demonstrated where this path leads. Their Flat Panel Haptics system embeds fluid-filled pumps behind a flexible OLED, raising solid-feeling buttons roughly 5mm high on demand, then retracting them. Each region takes about one second to fill. It’s not a shipping product, but it illustrates the technology converging toward exactly what a foldable Mac would need.
The most persuasive precedent, though, is already in your hands. Current Mac trackpads fake mechanical clicks entirely through haptics — the surface doesn’t physically depress at all. Most users have no idea. That’s not a trick. That’s proof the approach works at scale, and Apple will eventually make that argument loudly when it comes to keyboards.
As 9to5Mac’s September 2026 analysis noted: “The project may have been put on the back burner for now, but that is absolutely not the same as saying it has been cancelled.”
The original hybrid Mac/iPad pitch — one device, two operating systems, one hinge — has also been quietly superseded by software. Apple silicon Macs already run iPhone and iPad apps natively. iPhone mirroring blurs device lines further still. The hardware fusion Apple once dismissed as combining “a toaster and a fridge” is now largely happening at the OS layer instead, no hinge required.
What Comes Before the Fold
Dynamic hardware keyboards are the most likely bridge between today’s MacBook and whatever foldable comes next.
Before any all-screen Mac ships, expect an interim step: physical keys that keep their travel but change their labels contextually depending on the active app. The Sonder Keyboard explored this concept years ago using e-ink displays embedded in each keycap, and never reached mainstream adoption. Apple’s reportedly more sophisticated approach would go further. A video editor spending eight hours inside Final Cut Pro doesn’t need a standard QWERTY layout — they need their actual shortcuts surfaced visually on the keys directly in front of them. That’s a genuinely practical upgrade, not a novelty. The challenge of adapting to new input methods also connects to broader concerns about keyboard skills in an era of touchscreens and voice input.
The foldable Mac isn’t dead. It’s waiting on materials science and haptics to catch up to the concept. When they do, the device unfolds into something closer to a small drafting table — notebook one moment, expansive canvas the next. That timeline is measured in years, not product cycles.
