Speaking at the Air and Space Forces Association’s Air, Space and Cyber Conference in National Harbor, Maryland, Secretary of the Air Force Troy Meink said that “the Space Force now has on-orbit space control weapons capable of defending the joint force against hostile adversary action,” according to Air and Space Forces Magazine. Meink noted his phrasing was “very well thought-out,” signaling a deliberate disclosure rather than an accidental one.
Space Control, Explained
The Pentagon has confirmed weapons are operating in orbit, but what those weapons actually do remains classified.
What exactly are these systems? The specifics remain classified, and officials declined to confirm whether they are kinetic (physically destructive) or non-kinetic, a category that covers electronic warfare, directed energy, and cyber operations.
Open-source analysis points to several possibilities: orbiting jammers targeting adversary communications or radar satellites, laser systems designed to blind optical sensors, or maneuvering satellites capable of interfering with other spacecraft. None of those specifics are officially confirmed.
Under current Space Force doctrine, space control encompasses operations that disrupt, degrade, deny, or destroy adversary counterspace capabilities while protecting U.S. satellites from attack. Meink’s statement is the first time a senior U.S. official has publicly confirmed that systems serving that mission are already operating in orbit.
Golden Dome and What Comes Next
Those deployed space control weapons are distinct from the Space-Based Interceptor program, which remains under development as part of President Trump’s Golden Dome missile-defense architecture.
Space-Based Interceptors, or SBIs, are satellites designed to detect, track, and physically destroy ballistic missiles or hypersonic glide vehicles. They engage targets during the boost or midcourse phase, shortly after launch.
No country has fielded a fully operational version of this technology. Space Systems Command has awarded roughly $3.2 billion in prototype contracts to twelve companies. Recipients include SpaceX, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Anduril, Raytheon, True Anomaly, and Turion Space Corp, according to Defense Scoop reporting on the awards.
Prototype demonstrations are targeted for around 2028. Golden Dome’s projected total cost sits at approximately $185 billion, per Reuters, with some analyses projecting significantly higher long-term figures.
The SBI layer is considered the hardest technical challenge in the entire architecture, according to IDGA analysis. Scientific American notes that analysts widely flag feasibility and cost as unresolved questions.
This is the most technologically serious attempt to operationalize space-based missile defense since Reagan’s Strategic Defense Initiative: the Cold War concept that never advanced beyond the drawing board.
The Stakes
China and Russia’s counterspace programs are the stated drivers of the U.S. buildup, but the implications extend well beyond bilateral rivalry.
U.S. officials point to both nations’ development of anti-satellite missiles, jammers, lasers, and co-orbital systems as the primary justification for these capabilities. Proponents argue space control weapons and SBIs are essential to deter those threats and defend U.S. forces that depend on satellite communications, navigation, and intelligence.
Critics warn of arms-race dynamics, debris risks from kinetic engagements in a crowded orbit, and broader questions about strategic stability. The Outer Space Treaty bans weapons of mass destruction in orbit but does not prohibit conventional weapons stationed in space.
The 2028 prototype demonstrations will determine whether Golden Dome’s most ambitious layer is technically and financially viable. Meink’s careful public language signals that the Space Force intends to be considerably more transparent about how it plans to operate, and fight, in orbit.
