A Tesla pulls out of the Lee Gardens driveway onto Hysan Avenue, turning toward Leighton Road. A police motorcycle, emergency lights strobing, threads against traffic through the jam. Then they meet. Dashcam footage of the collision spread rapidly online. The officer ended up at Ruttonjee Hospital. The Tesla’s front license plate ended up on the asphalt.
What the Dashcam Shows
The footage is unambiguous — and the sequence of events is already shaping the investigation.
The Tesla exits the driveway and enters the lane. The police motorcycle, operated by an officer from the Hong Kong Island Regional Traffic Unit, is traveling against traffic (逆線) with warning lights activated. Hong Kong Police confirmed this was permitted: the officer was heading to a traffic control mission and entered Hysan Avenue against traffic due to serious congestion that risked blocking emergency services.
The vehicles collide mid-lane. The motorcycle overturns. A brief puff of white smoke rises from the bike. The officer hits the ground hard. Then — the detail that cuts through everything — he stands up unaided and tries to right the fallen motorcycle himself. Two bystanders sprint over to help. The Tesla driver walked away uninjured. The officer, conscious throughout, reported waist, back, and leg pain and was transported by ambulance to Ruttonjee Hospital. Scene photos show:

The asymmetry between the car’s cosmetic scrape and the officer’s physical state says everything about a motorcycle-versus-car impact.
Every Tesla watcher is asking the same question: was Autopilot or any driver-assistance mode active? The answer, currently, is that no official statement and no outlet confirms any driver-assistance involvement whatsoever. Reports note the Tesla driver’s sightlines were likely obstructed by surrounding vehicles and congestion as the car exited the driveway — a thoroughly human visibility problem. The case is now with the Hong Kong Island Region Traffic Special Accident Investigation Team, and no fault has been publicly assigned.
