Asus Rog Zephyrus S Ultra Slim Gaming Laptops are among the best thin and light gaming laptops thanks to their amazing amount of technology packed into such a slim design. And if you’re looking for a best gaming laptop for school, something you can use for work when you have assignments due, you’ll find a friend in the Zephyrus S too.

Why We Like It – Asus Rog Zephyrus S Ultra Slim Gaming Laptop

The Asus Rog Zephyrus S Ultra Slim Gaming Laptop packs a strong performance into a slim machine. The GPU is powerful enough to run games like Shadow of the Tomb Raider at its highest setting, and the CPU and RAM cut through many applications and video streaming with any slowdown.

  • Consistent Frame Rate
  • Still a Healthy Amount of Ports Despite Some Cuts
  • Amazing 1080P Panel
  • Poor Battery Life
  • Uncomfortable Keyboard

The Zephyrus S contains a 9th Gen Intel Core i7 processor, 16GB of RAM, a 512GB NVMe SSD Hard Drive, and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 graphics card with a Max Q design. The graphics card allows a consistent frame rate over 40 for high end, full HD gaming performance, and the RAM and CPU allow it to tear through all applications without slowdown. If you prefer a Nvidia GeForce RTX GPU instead, consider the Acer Predator Triton 500 RTX 2060.

Ultra Slim Gaming Laptops have a pretty bad reputation as battery guzzlers, and the Zephyrus S doesn’t do much to remedy the situation. The three and a half hour battery life may be only 30 minutes short of the average, but it’s still short nonetheless. If you want something better, consider the Gigabyte Aero 15.

While some ports have been cut compared to the original Zephyrus, the Zephyrus S still retains a healthy amount. The left side includes the power jack, one USB Type C port, two USB 2.0 ports, and a headphone jack. The right side has one USB 3.1 port and one USB Type-C. And on the back is an HDMI 2.0 port and a Kensington lock slot. If ports are your thing, check out the Razer Blade Stealth 13.3 too.

Build Quality

At four and a half pounds the Zephyrus S is not only one of the thinnest gaming laptops around, but also one of the lightest. This makes it perfect for on-the-go gaming or for taking it to school to do your work. The keyboard, on the other hand, feels a little uncomfortable because of the low travel, awkwardly-leveled, keys, and non-existent palm rests. On the plus side, though, the RGB lighting is highly customizable thanks to the Aura Sync tab.

The screen resolution on the Zephyrus S is stunning thanks to the 3m response time and the 113 percent rating on the sRGB color gamut. And while it may not be the most colorful, it is one of the brightest in comparison to many of its competitors. The speakers work well too by striking a good balance between treble and bass. But they could have just a little more depth to them.

Asus Rog Zephyrus S Ultra Slim Gaming Laptop Wrap Up

The positives really outweigh the negatives when it comes to the Asus Rog Zephyrus S Ultra Slim Gaming Laptop. The poor battery life is to be expected. It is a gaming laptop after all. The uncomfortable keyboard is a letdown, but a sacrifice they probably had to make considering the ultra slim design of the laptop. Still, if you’re using it mostly or gaming and not working, the keyboard should pose a minor inconvenience at best.
