Sixteen U.S. states now support Apple Wallet driver’s licenses, and three more are closing in. If you live in Utah, Kentucky, or North Carolina, here is what is confirmed, what is still expected, and what a digital ID can actually do for you.
What’s Actually Live Now
Virginia and Oklahoma joined the program in late summer 2026, bringing the total to 16 participating states.
Virginia went live in August 2026 as the 15th state; Oklahoma followed in September as the 16th, according to MacRumors reporting. At participating locations, you can tap your iPhone or Apple Watch to present your credential at selected TSA checkpoints, businesses, venues, and apps.
The key word there is “selected.” A Wallet ID works at some places but not others, closer to a transit card than a universal credential. Your physical license still needs to be in your wallet when you drive. It also remains required at any agency that has not adopted digital verification.
The Three States Expected Next
Utah, Kentucky, and North Carolina are on deck, but each comes with a different level of certainty.
Utah is the strongest near-term candidate. According to 9to5Mac, backend evidence of Utah’s integration surfaced during summer 2026, using the same method that preceded Virginia’s launch. Neither Apple nor the state has publicly confirmed a date, so treat this as expected, not guaranteed.
Kentucky announced plans to support Apple Wallet IDs and identified summer 2026 as its target window. The state has reportedly completed a required digital-ID platform upgrade, per 9to5Mac, but a public activation date remains unconfirmed.
North Carolina has the clearest public timeline of the three. The state launched its own NC Wallet digital license system, with Apple Wallet support officially targeted for early 2027. That is the most concrete commitment available, but it is not an imminent launch.
These three are not interchangeable: Utah is expected soon, Kentucky’s timing is unconfirmed, and North Carolina is officially a 2027 story.
What to Do Right Now
For residents of all three states, the practical answer is the same: wait for an official Apple Wallet announcement before attempting to enroll.
Apple Wallet enrollment is unavailable until Apple activates support in your state; separate state mobile-ID apps may be available to some residents earlier. When Apple Wallet support does arrive, open Wallet and tap the plus sign. Select Driver’s License or ID Cards, then follow the verification steps, including scanning your physical license. Until then, keep your physical card exactly where it is.
