The familiar problem of opening Netflix and finding nothing to watch is what AI Discover is designed to address. “AI Discover, a new tab on our TV app where a small group of members can try new ways to find their next great watch,” Netflix said in its announcement.
The tab appears in the TV app’s top navigation, marked by a red gem icon and a “New” label. It currently reaches a limited group of U.S. members using Netflix in English on supported TVs and TV-streaming devices.
Themes Over Titles
Instead of rows of thumbnails, the feature asks what kind of watch you are after right now.
AI Discover organizes recommendations around themes rather than presenting standard category rows. Those themes can reflect mood, viewing situation (such as a family movie night), how much time is available, recent viewing behavior, or what is currently popular.
A relevant clip appears alongside the theme options. Once a viewer selects a theme, Netflix surfaces matching titles and can offer narrower sub-themes for further refinement. Viewers who want a fresh direction can request one through a “Something Different” option.
The Feedback Layer
Viewers can correct the system in real time, not just passively receive what the algorithm surfaces.
The feature includes direct feedback controls. Viewers can indicate that a title should no longer appear in their AI Discover recommendations, keeping that suppression within the AI Discover tab rather than removing the title from Netflix entirely. They can also save titles to My List.
Who Has Access and What Stays the Same
The rollout is narrow by design, and the existing Netflix interface remains untouched for everyone outside the test.
Netflix currently restricts access to a small group of U.S. members using the app in English on compatible television devices. AI Discover is not available on Kids profiles.
Netflix says it plans to expand access gradually over the coming weeks, though no specific date appears in its announcement. Members outside the test group see no change to the standard Netflix experience.
Open Questions
Netflix frames AI Discover as a test environment, and the data needed to judge its effectiveness does not yet exist.
Netflix has previously tested discovery shortcuts, including shuffle-style playback and other recommendation interfaces. AI Discover adds real-time user input and AI-generated thematic navigation to that ongoing effort.
The questions that matter most remain unanswered. Does the feature get viewers watching faster? Do recommendations broaden taste or reinforce existing habits? Will the tab eventually expand to mobile and web? Netflix describes AI Discover as an experimental space whose features may eventually shape the core experience. Those answers will likely determine how far the test travels. For readers interested in AI-powered websites that can help with discovery beyond Netflix, there are already tools worth exploring.
