Shazam used to require a deliberate step: a song plays, you notice it, you reach for your phone or open an app. On Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4, that manual step is now optional, because automatic detection handles it before most wearers think to ask.
Both watches can detect music playing nearby and display the song title and artist directly in the Smart Stack, the scrollable widget layer on watchOS, without any manual input.
What the Feature Actually Does
On-device sound analysis and Shazam work together to identify ambient music and surface results in the Smart Stack.
Automatic Music Recognition uses Shazam alongside on-device sound analysis to listen for ambient music and generate an acoustic signature. When the watch identifies a track, the result appears in the Smart Stack.
To see it, swipe up from the watch face or turn the Digital Crown upward to open the Smart Stack. The Music Recognition widget appears there with the identified song.
Checking Your Eligibility
Automatic detection is limited to specific Apple Watch and iPhone hardware running iOS 27.
Hardware requirements are specific. Automatic detection works only on Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4, paired with an iPhone 11 or later, or an iPhone SE (2nd generation) or later, running iOS 27.
Turning It On
Music Detection can be enabled from Settings or directly from an inline prompt when the widget first appears.
The feature may prompt you to enable it the first time the widget appears, but manual activation is also available. Open Settings on the Apple Watch, select Smart Stack, and toggle Music Detection on.
What You Can Do With a Result
Identified tracks can be saved or opened in Apple Music directly from the widget, without reaching for a phone.
Once a song is identified, the widget offers two options: save the track to your Shazam library or open it in Apple Music.
When It Goes Quiet
Three states suspend Music Detection entirely: Lower Power Mode, Water Lock, and Sleep Focus.
The feature is unavailable when the watch is in any of those modes. If automatic identification appears to have stopped working, checking those states is a practical first step before assuming a technical problem.
Older Apple Watch Models
Earlier Apple Watch models retain manual song identification through the Music Recognition app and Siri.
Automatic detection is exclusive to Series 12 and Ultra 4, according to Apple. Owners of earlier watches can still identify songs manually through the Music Recognition app or by asking Siri, so the underlying capability remains available even without the automatic Smart Stack behavior.
What Happens to the Audio
Apple says ambient audio never leaves a protected processing environment on the watch itself.
According to Apple, the watch processes ambient audio inside the Secure Exclave, the watch’s dedicated secure processing environment. Raw audio is inaccessible to the operating system, apps, and Apple itself, and is immediately deleted after processing. Apple says the acoustic signature, a compact representation of the sound, cannot be reversed to reconstruct the original audio.
The Practical Case
The feature is most useful when a wearer cannot conveniently reach for a phone.
Catching a song name by glancing at a wrist is a meaningfully different workflow from opening an app. For Series 12 and Ultra 4 owners who regularly encounter unidentified music in public spaces, Music Detection is worth enabling.
