Apple told 9to5Mac’s Benjamin Mayo that a software update is coming early next week to address a Face ID-related bug affecting some iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max units. Apple has not publicly specified a version number or an exact release date beyond that early-next-week window.
The bug behavior is specific. When Face ID fails during an app authentication attempt, such as unlocking the Passwords app, some affected devices freeze briefly and then restart unexpectedly.
MacRumors reports that Apple is testing iOS 27.0.1, and that update is the likely vehicle for the fix. That connection remains reported, not formally confirmed by Apple, so treat the version number as probable rather than certain.
The bug is intermittent and does not affect every iPhone 18 Pro or Pro Max. Face ID is woven into how you access banking apps, password managers, and sensitive data, so even an occasional failure registers as more than a minor inconvenience.
