Key Takeaways

Key Takeaways

  • LAPTOP meme coin reached a $144 billion valuation backed by only $48,000 in liquidity.
  • Over 11,500 wallets lost money, with 80% of buyers underwater within one hour of launch.
  • Conditional token burns and targeted airdrops distinguish LAPTOP’s design from prior political meme coins.

A token briefly worth more on paper than most major cryptocurrencies was backed by a liquidity pool containing roughly $48,000. Hunter Biden’s LAPTOP meme coin launched on Wednesday morning, and within an hour, more than 11,500 wallets were sitting at a loss, with approximately 80% of buyers paying too much before most people had finished their morning coffee.

LAPTOP launched around 8 a.m. ET on Base, Coinbase’s Ethereum layer-2 network, with a total supply of 1 billion tokens.

A $144 Billion Valuation Built on $48,000

The gap between LAPTOP’s peak paper valuation and its actual available liquidity tells the story of the launch more clearly than any price chart.

Within two minutes of opening trading, the price peaked near $190.81, according to Arkham blockchain intelligence data. At that moment, the token’s fully diluted valuation (FDV), meaning what the entire 1 billion token supply would theoretically be worth at the peak price, approached $144 billion.

The liquidity pool actually available to support that valuation held approximately $48,000. Within 30 minutes, LAPTOP had shed roughly 90% of its value. By the one-hour mark, it traded near $4.77, down approximately 99% from the high, and later reported around $2 by afternoon.

Two Wallets, Two Outcomes

On-chain data from the launch illustrate how seconds of timing, not strategy, separated the winners from the losers.

The difference between profit and loss came down to minutes, sometimes seconds. One wallet withdrew roughly $249,800 from Binance, purchased 9,124 LAPTOP tokens near launch, and exited the position shortly after for approximately $1.18 million, per on-chain data reported by Decrypt.

Another trader spent around $200,000 to acquire 919 LAPTOP at roughly $218 per token. Within an hour, that position was worth less than $3,000. KuCoin reported more than 11,500 wallets ended the day at a loss, with approximately 80% of buyers underwater shortly after launch.

The Political Meme-Coin Playbook

LAPTOP’s tokenomics borrow a familiar structure from prior political tokens while adding a few unconventional wrinkles designed to generate a different narrative.

LAPTOP’s tokenomics include a 30% founder allocation locked for six months and vesting over roughly two years. An additional 20% of supply is set aside for airdrops across two rounds.

Up to 30% of total supply is reserved for conditional token burns. Qualifying events include a Democratic victory in the 2028 presidential election, Bitcoin reaching a new all-time high, or LAPTOP’s market cap surpassing TRUMP’s.

One of the more unusual airdrop targets is wallets that previously lost money trading Donald Trump’s TRUMP token, with the project framing LAPTOP explicitly as a “refund.” Additional airdrop allocations target Hunter Biden’s Substack subscribers and contacts of video journalist Andrew Callaghan.

TRUMP launched in January 2025, peaked near $75, and later traded around $2 to $3, a decline of roughly 96 to 97% from its high. Nearly 1 million TRUMP holders collectively lost an estimated $3.81 billion, according to reporting cited by Yahoo Finance. Melania Trump’s token followed a similar arc, crashing more than 99% from its own peak.

Decrypt’s analysis notes that celebrity meme coins reliably draw a fast first wave of buyers, but a sustaining second wave “has gone badly more often than not.”

What Comes Next Is the Real Question

LAPTOP’s first trading day produced clear losers and a few well-timed winners, but whether its structured design changes the longer-term outcome is a question the data cannot yet answer.

LAPTOP’s tokenomics include founder lockups, conditional burns, and targeted airdrops that some analysts argue distinguish it from a straightforward collapse. Whether those features matter in practice remains unclear. The alternative trajectory, a drift toward thin liquidity and diminishing relevance, is already well-documented in the histories of TRUMP and Melania tokens. Day one sharpened the question. It did not answer it.
