Top testers liked the Odyssey G5’s gaming performance and attributed it to its low input lag and contrast ratio. They also noted that its curved screen improved the viewing experience but were not too happy with the bad ergonomics and poor viewing angles. The G5’s color was also disappointing.

Product Snapshot

Overview

The Samsung Odyssey G5 LC27G55T is a budget gaming monitor released in 2020. The curved monitor has an acceptable 144Hz refresh rate, and although this is far from what is offered by the best computer monitors on the market, it is still good enough for tear-free gaming. The G5 is also one of the best gaming monitors to go for if on a budget, as it features a low input lag of 4.5ms for good gaming responsiveness and an excellent contrast ratio of 2997:1 that has it produce deep blacks. Unlike the Samsung Odyssey G3 S24AG30, it comes with support for HDR content, as well as native FreeSync support with G-Sync compatibility for gaming. Its reflection handling is also good courtesy of its matte anti-reflective coating, and unlike the Samsung C27RG5, it has a curved display for more immersive viewing.

Consensus

our Verdict

Experts have hailed the Samsung Odyssey G5 as a great gaming monitor for buyers who appreciate a responsive gaming experience. This is thanks to the test results of testers from Rtings, who loved how immediately commands were executed thanks to a low input lag of 4.5ms. They also commended the display for its high contrast ratio of 2997:1 and agreed that dark blacks appeared a lot deeper during their experiments compared to the Samsung Odyssey G7 S28AG70, which has a lower static contrast ratio of 1155:1. Reviewers from Display Ninja were also pleased with its 1000R screen curvature, as they established that this provided a more immersive viewing experience.

Unfortunately, the G5’s bad ergonomics made it difficult for critics to adjust, and this, plus its poor viewing angles, made the Samsung G7 LC32G75T seem a much better alternative. They also didn’t like that it couldn’t display a wide color gamut, as it only had a 74.7% coverage of the DCI-P3 color scale.

ReasonS to Buy

  • Low input lag
  • High contrast ratio
  • Good reflection handling
  • Supports HDR content
  • Curved screen for an immersive viewing experience

Reason to Avoid

  • Poor ergonomics
  • Lackluster color
  • Bad viewing angles

The Samsung G5 LC27G55T doesn’t square up to the AOC CQ27G2’s better ergonomics and faster response time of 15.1ms compared to the G5’s 21.9ms. Still, it does offer support for HDR content (which the AOC does not) and a higher SDR brightness level of 280 nits compared to the CQ27G2’s 197 nits, which is great for a moderately lit room.

The Samsung G5 LC27G55T has one HDMI port, just like the LG 32GK850G-B, but the difference is that the G5’s HDMI 2.0 port can handle more bandwidth than the LG’s HDMI 1.4 port. The G5 also supports HDR content, unlike the LG monitor.

The Samsung G5 LC27G55T is the precursor to the Samsung Odyssey G5 S27AG50, which was launched with new and improved features such as an IPS panel for wider viewing angles, and a faster response time of 8.1ms compared to the LC27G55T’s 21.9ms.

The S27AG50 also has a faster 165Hz refresh rate compared to the LC27G55T’s 144Hz, making it more ideal for tear-free gaming.

The Samsung Odyssey G5 offers a higher 1440p screen resolution than the Samsung Odyssey G3 LC27G35T’s 1080p. The G5 can also render HDR content while the G3 cannot, however, the G3 has better ergonomics and is easier to adjust.
