On November 3, 2026, Reddit began testing ads placed directly within its own search results, available to a select group of eligible advertisers and matched contextually to what users are actively looking up.
The format works as Reddit describes: search “espresso station” and ads for espresso machines, coffee beans, or mugs may appear. Search “home office setup” and ads for monitors, desks, or office chairs may surface alongside organic community posts.
Reddit characterized its search pages as carrying high purchase and search intent, a framing that signals the format is aimed at performance advertisers rather than broad brand campaigns.
Huffman told investors that Google search-referral traffic had declined “meaningfully” during the third quarter as Google expanded AI Mode and AI Overviews. Reddit’s earnings-call materials added a sharper figure: referrals had fallen by more than one million per week on average during October, a trend tied in part to Google’s Nebraska and other data center expansions powering its AI products.

Reddit’s Q3 2026 revenue reached $895 million, up 53% year over year, with advertising revenue at $847 million, up 54%. Forward guidance was softer, with projected Q4 sales of $1 billion to $1.03 billion, below analyst expectations of roughly $1.05 billion.
Global daily active uniques rose 12% year over year to 130.3 million in Q3, below analyst projections of 133.7 million. U.S. daily active uniques fell 2% year over year to 50.7 million, also short of the 53.5 million analysts had expected, according to CNBC.
Reddit is separately testing a requirement for users to log in to access at least some content, starting in markets outside the United States. The company has not specified the final scope or rollout timing.
Reddit describes logged-in users as more engaged and monetizable, since registered users provide stronger behavioral signals for ad targeting. The move could also reduce unauthorized scraping of Reddit content by automated AI systems, though Reddit has not established what effect that would have in practice.
Search ads are appealing because they reach users mid-research, when purchase decisions are forming. Whether that intent translates into more valuable impressions than passive feed browsing has not been established by available data.
The risk runs in the other direction as well. If sponsored results crowd the community recommendations that give Reddit’s search pages their value, users may stop trusting what they find there. Reddit’s search ad test monetizes the platform’s community character; it also carries the potential to dilute it.
Reddit has not disclosed how many advertisers are participating, when or whether the format will expand broadly, or any early data on click-through or conversion rates. The company said it will assess user responses and advertiser performance before making further decisions.
The financial test Reddit faces is clear, even if the outcome is not. If Google continues to answer questions directly and casual logged-out visitors keep declining, search ads and a larger logged-in user base need to generate enough incremental revenue to cover the gap. That window narrows each week Google expands its AI answer coverage.
