It might be safe to assume that Google has plans to ‘map’ the world’s ski slopes.  Today they unveiled the Google Street View snowmobile – it should be called Google Ski View.  Wacky I know, but after seeing the Google Street View Tricycle it’s really not all that shocking.  This announcement arrives just in time for this year’s winter Olympics, which are due to kick off any day now.  Gimmick?  Yes, but outside of the norm of Google’s efforts to map (i.e. index) just about everything?  No.

The imagery is available now and is currently limited to the the 2010 Winter Olympics’ location, Whistler Mountain in Vancouver.

Confirmed: Netflix Planning 5.1-channel Surround Later This Year, But No 1080p

netflix-logoNews broke yesterday that Netflix would bring 1080p video and 5.1 channel surround sound by year’s end.  Now, after things have developed, Netflix has back peddled and said that 1080p is not on the books this year despite Microsoft’s Silverlight codec boasting support for the resolution.  But 5.1-channel surround sound will arrive and with it closed captioning.

Do you care about 1080p versus the current 720p found on the Xbox 360 and Roku box?  At this point I’d rather the improved sound and then the higher resolution since the bandwidth demands are probably twice that of the current HD resolution.
