Consensus

our Verdict

Product testers were pleased with the LG 27GN850-B, recommending it for gaming. Testers at Monitor Nerds were impressed by its 144Hz native refresh rate and outstanding 6.8 ms total response time, saying they observed only minimal motion blur during testing. Editors at RTINGS lauded this device’s IPS panel tech, explaining that the image on this gaming monitor remains accurate when viewed from the sides. This LG monitor has a 27-inch 2560 x 1440 screen, which proved immersive, offering clear text and visuals, and testers recommended it for the office. They discovered that it has wide HDR and SDR color spaces, covering 88.8% of the Adobe RGB xy and 99.8% of the sRGB color spaces respectively. Thus, experts endorsed it for content creation. Users seeking a large, more immersive screen should check out the 38-inch curved LG 38WN95C-W. Editors were also pleased that this monitor has 4K-ready HDMI 2.0 ports. However, product analysts were disappointed by this device’s relatively low 852:1 contrast ratio, saying that black images appear grayish in a dark room. Also, although experts were happy that this monitor has HDR tech, they were disappointed by its relatively low 325-nit HDR peak brightness and lack of a local dimming function.

Reason to Buy

  • Great 144Hz refresh rate
  • FreeSync tech and G-SYNC compatibility
  • Fast response times and low 4.0 ms input lag
  • Excellent QHD resolution and decent screen size
  • Ultra-wide viewing angles

Reason to Avoid

  • Low contrast ratio
  • Poor HDR peak brightness
  • Lacks a local dimming feature

The Gigabyte M34WQ has a much bigger 34-inch screen compared to the 27-inch LG 27GN850-B. Additionally, the Gigabyte display has HDR10 tech, which is missing on the LG. However, the LG monitor boasts a better 280Hz refresh rate compared to the LG display’s 144Hz. Unlike the LG gaming monitor, the Gigabyte device has a KVM switch, which simplifies controlling multiple computers.

The LG 27GN850-B features some improvements over its predecessor, the LG 27GL850-B. The newer monitor has wider SDR and HDR color gamuts, covering 99.8% and 88.8% of the sRGB and Adobe RGB xy color spaces respectively, compared to the older monitors’ 99.6% and 84.2% coverage. This means that the newer monitor is a better choice for media creators. It also has a quicker 6.8 ms total response time compared to the 7.8 ms of the older monitor. However, the older device has USB ports, which are lacking on the newer model.

The LG 27GN850-B has a lower 144 Hz refresh rate compared to the 180 Hz maximum refresh rate of the LG 27GP850-B. Additionally, the LG 27GP850-B has a USB hub and a black frame insertion feature, which reduces the appearance of blur in some situations, but both features are not there on the LG 27GN850-B (this review).
