Why We Like It – HP OfficeJet 6978 Wireless Printer

The HP OfficeJet 6978 Wireless Printer is a superb inkjet printer available at an even better price point. It is more than four years old at this point and has been marked down quite a bit over the years. Even if you find this printer at a low price in used condition, it is a printer that is worth checking out. Check out our HP Officejet 200 mobile printer review for a more portable printing option.

Pros
  • Two months of free HP Instant Ink subscription
  • The straightforward setup process
  • Automatic two-sided printing (Print Scan)
Cons
  • Print speed is not that great

Speed

Print speed is not the strong suit of the HP OfficeJet 6978 Wireless Printer (even in color black). And it’s evident that HP did not keep high print speeds in mind while designing this printer. It’s made for putting out professional quality prints, not for volume. And for that reason, HP doesn’t even advertise a proper ISO pages per minute print speed number for it. For more print speed, you need to get something like the Brother INKvestment MFC-J985DW or the HP Officejet Pro 8720.

Print Quality

Now coming to the print quality, the max copy resolution you can select is about 1200 x 600 DPI. You might be thinking that it’s not much at all. Yes, you might not get very detailed photo-quality prints, but you can still get professional-quality documents out of it. Professional quality paperwork doesn’t really need a very high DPI; even 600 DPI is just fine for that use case. But the color representation is very accurate and vivid. Still, if you really need a higher copy resolution, go for the Canon PIXMA G5020 MegaTank Inkjet Printer.

Efficiency

Power efficiency is great, and the ink efficiency is even better on this printer. On top of that, it’s an HP Instant Ink printer. And you get two months’ worth of a free subscription of HP Instant Ink subscription. However, finishing the included ink cartridges within two months is cumbersome, no matter how much you print.

Advanced Features

Even though it’s more than four years old, it has all the modern features of a new inkjet printer. And for mobile printing, you can sign up at hp.com and use WiFi to connect your mobile devices. This means you can connect an iPad to this wireless printer. The Brother INKvestment MFC-J985DW is another inkjet printer that has all of these features at a cheaper price. Value

Value-wise the HP OfficeJet 6978 Wireless Printer is pretty good right now. It launched at a decent enough price for the time over four years ago. But over the years, it kept on getting marked down by HP. Currently, you can pick it up used, at just over a benjamin.

HP OfficeJet 6978 Wireless Printer Wrap Up

The HP OfficeJet 6978 is a great printer for everyone who needs professional-quality prints. If you buy it for your professional workspace, especially your home office, you won’t regret it.
