You’ve been there: you call a restaurant, get put on hold, wait three minutes, and hang up without an answer. Then you drive over anyway and find a 45-minute queue for a table of four. Yelp’s new Check for Me feature is designed to solve that problem. It sends an AI phone agent to call the restaurant on your behalf and texts you the current wait time before you head out.
Yelp announced the update on October 20, 2026. The company has been building voice AI tools for restaurants for some time, and Check for Me extends that technology to the consumer side of the transaction.
How Check for Me Works
The feature hands off the phone call to an AI agent so you receive the wait time by text, without dialing yourself.
On an eligible restaurant’s Yelp page, you enter your party size and phone number, then trigger the AI agent. It calls the restaurant, asks for the current wait time when walk-ins are possible, and sends you the result by text within minutes.
The feature is rolling out in the coming months in the U.S., on iOS only, limited to eligible restaurant pages and Yelp Assistant.
One scenario worth watching: if a restaurant already uses its own automated phone system, Yelp’s agent could end up talking to a bot instead of a person. According to TechCrunch, that kind of agent-to-agent exchange raises the possibility of miscommunication or failed responses. That remains a possibility rather than a confirmed flaw in Yelp’s system.
What Else Yelp Is Updating
Yelp Assistant is gaining booking, memory, reminders, and list tools designed to reduce the steps between discovering a restaurant and actually going.
OpenTable integration now lets you book eligible restaurants directly inside the Yelp app, without switching to another service. The assistant can also recall preferences you mentioned in earlier conversations, and recent chat history is now reviewable, with full history access planned for later.
Recurring reminders for activity suggestions are also available. Customizable lists, starting with “Been Here” and “Want to Go,” support filters by location, category, and cuisine, plus notes and sharing options.
Personalized recommendations based on your saved places are coming as well, according to Yelp’s official announcement.
The Business Side
Smart Lead Reply gives local-service businesses an AI agent to handle inbound inquiries and qualify leads before a human steps in.
Yelp is launching Smart Lead Reply, a paid AI product that responds to customer inquiries, collects project details, and qualifies leads. Businesses configure the agent themselves, setting services offered, pricing, questions to ask, and scheduling links.
The product costs $30 per month for eligible businesses using Yelp’s Request a Quote feature, covering categories including movers, plumbers, roofers, electricians, cleaners, and contractors. Yelp is positioning itself as both a customer-acquisition platform and an automation tool for small businesses.
What This Actually Changes
These updates shift Yelp’s role from a directory you consult into an agent that acts in the physical world on your behalf.
Together, the consumer and business features represent a meaningful change in how Yelp fits into local commerce. The first task is something as modest as checking a wait time, but the direction is clear.
Whether it delivers depends on rollout quality, restaurant participation, and how cleanly the system handles calls that don’t go according to plan. For now, the feature makes a straightforward bet: that you’d rather get a text than sit on hold.
