A shipment leaves Silicon Valley heading south — servers, networking gear, the physical guts of some future data center. A private escort vehicle rides alongside. Looks professional. Looks secure. Then another car closes in. The escort spins out. The truck vanishes. This isn’t a screenplay pitch. According to Wired, it’s what cargo theft looks like now — and the freight system was never built for it.
When the Escort Becomes the Target
Organized thieves are reportedly using roadway collisions to neutralize escort vehicles before stealing AI hardware shipments worth millions.
Two California shipments reportedly traveling from Silicon Valley to Southern California, each with private escorts, disappeared after the escorts were disabled in separate incidents. In one, thieves apparently rear-ended the escort vehicle, causing it to flee. In another, what appeared to be a PIT maneuver — the tactical spin-out technique familiar to anyone who has watched true-crime highway footage — caused the escort to spin before the load disappeared. Freight security consultant Gerardo Pachuca described these as among the worst cargo-theft methods he has ever seen. One important caveat: Wired could not independently verify either incident, as the source provided insufficient identifying details, and both the shipments and drivers remain missing.
Freight security executive Danny Ramon called one incident a “coordinated assault” involving “AI hardware.” Coordinated is the operative word. The physical attack on the highway is reportedly the final act in a longer con — one that begins with:
- carrier-identity fraud
- fake motor carrier numbers
- phishing freight brokers to gather shipment intelligence before anyone ever gets near the road
Fewer Thefts, Far More Damage

Beyond chips and servers, recoveries outside Chicago have included:
- data center cooling equipment
- server switches
- copper wire — the unglamorous physical layer that keeps AI infrastructure running, according to Tom’s Hardware
Demand for this hardware is outpacing legitimate supply, and that gap functions as a market. Organized crime, apparently, read the memo.
When servers cannot safely travel public roads, AI infrastructure timelines stall. That is a physical security failure no amount of compute investment anticipated.
