Buried inside a Japan-only hardware announcement, Sony has restated a policy that was already on the books: new PlayStation video games will sell exclusively as digital downloads beginning January 2028. This is not a new deadline. It is a reiteration, and the distinction matters.
What Sony Actually Said
The confirmed policy comes directly from Sony’s official Japanese PlayStation blog, published October 13, 2026.
According to that announcement, translated from Japanese: “PlayStation games released from January 2028 onwards will only be available as digital downloads through the PlayStation Store and other retailers. Disc versions of games released before January 2028 will remain available.”
The Console That Prompted the Reminder
The reiteration appeared inside the announcement for a new Japan-only PS5 model, not as a standalone policy update.
The notice accompanied Sony’s reveal of the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition Midnight Black, a Japan-only model releasing November 19, 2026, priced at ÂĄ55,000 and equipped with an 825GB SSD but no built-in disc drive. Sony will also sell a matching Midnight Black disc drive separately, though pairing it requires an internet connection, and the console is restricted to Japanese system settings and Japan-registered PlayStation accounts.
What Actually Changes, and What Does Not
The announcement does not end support for existing disc-equipped consoles or for physical games released before the cutoff.
Pre-2028 physical releases remain playable on disc-equipped PS5 consoles, and even the new Digital Edition can accept physical media if you attach the separately sold drive. The practical shift is narrower but meaningful: after January 2028, no newly released PlayStation console game will ship on disc under Sony’s announced plan. For new releases covered by this policy, the choice between a physical and digital edition simply disappears.
The Ownership Context
Sony’s position in ongoing litigation adds weight to the physical-versus-digital debate.
In response to an active class-action lawsuit, Sony argued in its filing that digital purchases are licenses rather than ownership, citing its software license agreement, which states “The Software is licensed to you, not sold,” according to IGN’s reporting. That argument has not been resolved by any court ruling. Physical discs can generally be resold, traded, or lent, though play may still depend on console compatibility, patches, or account requirements.
The Deadline That Actually Matters
January 2028 is the practical planning date for anyone who values physical releases.
If physical disc releases factor into your collection or your budget, January 2028 is the date to plan around. After that, Sony says new PlayStation console games will be offered digitally rather than on newly produced discs.
