Rockstar’s new police system doesn’t care where you are — it cares what the cops know about you. That distinction is everything. GTA 6 returns to six Wanted Stars and layers them with an evidence-tracking HUD that transforms every police encounter into an information war. All details come from Rockstar’s gameplay demo as described by IGN, ComicBook, SVG, and similar outlets, plus Rockstar North’s Rob Nelson’s public statements. Exact thresholds may shift before launch, but the core mechanics are confirmed.
From Star Meter to Manhunt Engine
Four star states now represent four completely different problems — and confusing one for another is how escapes fall apart.
- Solid white stars — direct line of sight: active pursuit, cops have eyes on you
- Flashing white — sight is broken, but police are searching your last known position
- Red stars — the chase is technically “lost,” yet you remain inside an active heat zone can swallow the entire map where officers hunt by profile rather than location; at six stars, that zone can consume the entire map
- Hollow, black-outlined stars — a crime was reported, but you are unidentified; police know something happened — they just don’t know it was you
Being wanted and being identified are now two entirely separate problems to solve.
“The Wanted system in GTA 6 requires that someone witness the crime, or an alarm needs to be set off for it to be reported to the law.” — Rob Nelson, Rockstar North
What the Icons Under Your Stars Actually Mean
These red HUD icons function as a live evidence board — each one is a piece of police intelligence that must be destroyed on its own terms.
- Human silhouette — physical description captured; change hairstyle or appearance meaningfully, not just accessories
- Clothes hanger — outfit identified; a baseball cap won’t save you, perform a full swap using spare outfits stored in your personal vehicle’s trunk
- Camera — CCTV footage obtained; stay out of surveillance-heavy areas while heat remains high
- Car icon — vehicle identified; ditch it entirely, don’t just park around the corner
- Couple icon — Jason and Lucia spotted together; split up and move separately to clear this track
- Weapon icon (reported in select previews via ComicBook and others; subject to final confirmation at launch) — armament identified
Clearing one icon clears nothing else. Each track is fully independent.
How to Actually Lower Your Heat
Escaping the chase and escaping the heat are not the same problem — treating them as one is the fastest way back to six stars.
Think of a clean getaway like a Hitman mission debrief: methodical, not panicked. Check your star state first, read every icon underneath, then act on each one separately. A full outfit swap combined with a hairstyle change properly invalidates both clothing and identity evidence. Masks worn before a crime prevent facial identification from registering at all — but they don’t block clothing, vehicle, or companion tracking, so the rest of the evidence board still needs attention. Pre-crime stealth is always cheaper than post-crime cleanup.
Red stars inside a hot zone mean officers are still searching based on your profile. Return to the crime area with lit icons active and the clock resets — potentially escalating straight back into a full pursuit. At six stars, the heat zone can swallow the entire map, making low-profile patience the smarter move over forcing another confrontation. Sometimes waiting is the correct play.
GTA 6’s system is stealth-game logic applied to an open-world sandbox — closer to a prestige crime drama’s evidence board than anything video games like GTA 5 asked of you. Treat every escape as an information problem rather than a speed problem, and survival odds improve considerably. All mechanics are confirmed from pre-launch previews; some details may shift at final release.
