You know the feeling: the show is already starting, your guests are settled, and the streaming stick is still finding its way to the home screen. Amazon’s new Fire TV Stick 4K, priced at $159.99, targets exactly that frustration.
The device launched September 30, 2026, pairing updated hardware with a redesigned remote that may be the more interesting half of the package.
What’s Under the Hood
Amazon reports meaningful speed gains, but independent benchmarks are not in yet.
The stick runs a quad-core 1.7GHz processor with 8GB of internal storage, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, and Bluetooth Low Energy. Supported formats include HDR10+, HLG, AV1, H.265, H.264, and VP9.

According to Amazon, the device gets you from power-on to content 20% to 40% faster than a similarly priced competing 4K stick. The company also says apps launch more than 35% faster and video playback begins nearly 20% sooner.
These are manufacturer-reported comparisons, not independently verified benchmarks. The competing device, test conditions, and network configuration were not fully disclosed.
Amazon also claims the stick outperformed the built-in interfaces on three 4K smart televisions in its own testing. That claim is worth noting if your TV’s native software feels sluggish, though it carries the same caveat: Amazon conducted the testing.
One convenience feature worth mentioning is Direct Power, which lets the stick draw electricity from a compatible television’s USB port, trimming cable clutter. Whether it works for your setup depends on your TV’s USB output capacity.
The Remote and the New OS
The asymmetric design is genuinely different; Vega OS’s sideloading limits still need clarification.
The redesigned Fire TV Remote uses an asymmetric shape: flat on top, curved and weighted at the base. The goal is to let you orient it by feel without looking down, with frequently used buttons featuring differentiated surfaces and indentations.
A customizable shortcut button can open a selected app or activate features such as closed captioning or screen magnification. The remote is also sold separately for approximately $14.99, with standalone availability expected in late October.
Amazon has also announced a Fire TV Remote Plus, with an aluminum build, backlit buttons, and a Find My Remote function. That product is expected in early 2027 and is not included with this device.
On the software side, this Fire TV Stick 4K runs Vega OS rather than the older Fire OS platform and ships with Alexa+. Reports indicate Vega OS may limit or block Android-style sideloading of apps outside Amazon’s official storefront. Amazon has not fully clarified this restriction, so buyers who rely on sideloading should review the company’s final documentation before purchasing. For most buyers, this device competes on claimed speed, a more tactile remote, and value.
