The Sony XP700 delighted expert reviewers with its deep bass levels, loud max volume, and long battery life. However, its lack of a voice assistant, missing WiFi connectivity, and missing speakerphone functionality disappointed the reviewers.

Product Snapshot

Overview

The Sony XP700 is a high-end Bluetooth speaker that was first released in early 2021. The speaker has an exceptional battery life that the manufacturer claims will last up to 25 hours, and it can also play stereo content. It also has built-in handles that make it slightly easier to move around and customizable RGB lighting to create an enjoyable ambiance. The speaker’s sound can be adjusted through its graphical Equalizer, a characteristic common among the best speakers in the market. Bluetooth connectivity on the XP700 is also quite good as it can be paired with two devices simultaneously, and its range of connectivity extends up to 334.6 ft. This long-range Bluetooth connectivity is also relatively standard among the highest-rated Bluetooth speakers. The XP70 also has a rich port selection, as it features an AUX port, a mic input, and a mic and guitar input. The XP700 is meant for use outdoors, but if you prefer a soundbar designed for use indoors, then our Sony HTST7-HD soundbar with wireless subwoofer review might be worth checking out.

Consensus

our Verdict

Product testers lauded the Sony XP700 for its deep bass levels, as well as its loud volume. Top testers from Rtings also liked how loud the XP700 could get when playing music or streaming movies. This is something it has in common with the SOUNDBOKS (Gen 3), which we’ve covered in our SOUNDBOKS (Gen 3) review. After their battery tests, reviewers were also pleased that the speaker could last up to 17 hours. They also liked that the XP700 had a MEGA BASS setting, adding a good amount of depth to its sound profile. Expert reviewers from PC Mag were also happy that the XP700 had a rich port selection.

Unfortunately, testers weren’t pleased with its large size, as this made it hard to move around. The Theater Solutions B83GR is a smaller, more portable alternative designed to blend in an outdoor setting. Check it out in our Theater Solutions B83GR review. Testers also lamented its lack of WiFi connectivity and missing voice assistant and speakerphone functionality.

When comparing the Sony XP700 and the Sony XB90, buyers need to note that the XP700 is water resistant while the XB90 is not, but the XB90 has support for both Google Assistant and Siri while the XP700 does not. Still, the XP700 has an AUX input while the XB90 does not, but the XB90 can be paired with up to 3 devices while the XP700 is limited to two. Check out our Sony XB90 review to see what else it can do.

The Sony XP700 is battery-powered while the JBL PartyBox 710 is wired, but the XP700 has a more extended Bluetooth range of 334.6 ft than the PartyBox 710, which has a range of up to 282ft. Still, the 710 has wheels that make it easier to move around.
