On every iPhone since 2022, juggling all three meant switching between apps — or watching one Live Activity quietly disappear while the other two competed for the pill. On iPhone 18 Pro, reportedly, all three sit at the top of your screen simultaneously.

Since Dynamic Island debuted on iPhone 14 Pro, Apple’s own documentation has capped the feature at two simultaneous Live Activities — one attached to the TrueDepth camera cutout, one detached. iPhone 18 Pro reportedly changes that number to three. According to MacObserver’s analysis of iOS 27 code, the three-item layout activates automatically when the sensor region drops below 100 layout points — roughly 16.57mm wide — suggesting Apple explicitly coupled the new capability to a precise hardware threshold.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman describes the result as a “smaller and improved” Dynamic Island that lets users “toggle between three live tasks.”
What that means in practice:
- Current iPhones (14 Pro through 17 series): maximum two simultaneous Live Activities, per official documentation and WWDC sessions
- iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max: three concurrent activities, reportedly toggled at the top of the screen

Does the Third Slot Actually Matter?
The real question isn’t whether three beats two — it’s whether Apple is quietly turning Dynamic Island into something more like a persistent control surface.
Think of it less like a notification chip and more like a sports ticker: always present, always updating, never demanding your full attention. That framing — Dynamic Island as a mini HUD rather than an alert system — is what Apple has been building toward since iPhone 14 Pro. Adding a third slot deepens that logic in a way one more camera lens simply doesn’t.
The developer angle is worth noting, too. App makers designing Live Activities now know their activity coexists alongside up to two others simultaneously. That makes compact iconography and tight minimal layouts more important than ever. Travel apps coordinating flight status, hotel check-in, and ride tracking — think of managing three live maps on a road trip, except it all fits in a pill at the top of your screen — are among the more obvious beneficiaries of the expanded capacity.
Three Live Activities won’t reorder your day. But if you’re already tracking a delivery, a workout, and a flight in the same afternoon, having that third slot visible without unlocking your phone is the kind of quiet, useful upgrade that makes a Pro model feel like it earned the name.
